Question for the slow losers

Recommended Posts

So my question is when did you realize you were a slow loser, pre-op or post-op? Has exercise helped?

I realized I was a "slow" loser pretty early on. I lost over 8 pounds the first week of my pre-op diet, but my pre-op diet was only about 450 calories a day and I was instructed to keep up the exercise I'd already been doing, which was about 600 calories-worth of cardio! So it's no shock I dropped weight fast that week! Of course I was also dizzy all the time and falling asleep at my desk, so by the second week, I cut back on my exercise and "only" dropped about 2 pounds.

In my first month post op I "only" lost just under 15 pounds and I remember being really disappointed and frustrated about that. Now I would KILL to lose 15 pounds in a month!!!! Month two I managed to lose about 8.5 pounds. And since then I've been right at 6 pounds a month. It's looking like I'm right on track for another 6 pounds this month (month seven). Honestly, now I'm just happy to keep up this 6-pound-per-month pace. If I do, I should hit goal right around my one year surgeversary.

I didn't really get heavily into regular exercise until month 4 or 5 and I don't think it's had much effect on my rate of loss. Still losing 6 pounds per month. But it has had a MAJOR impact on my body composition and my body fat percentage. I didn't start getting compliments on my weight loss until I started to put on some muscle and get leaner. My body fat percentage was down to 28.5% last time I checked it a few days ago. My nutritionist's goal for me was between 25 and 28%, so I'm almost already there, even though I still have 20 pounds to her actual weight goal.

I'm not sure if I should be worried but I believe I am a slow loser. Granted I'm only on day 11 of the pre-op liquid diet but I haven't lost much. It's very disappointing watching the numbers on the scale. I think I may have lost 3lbs to 4lbs. So my question is when did you realize you were a slow loser, pre-op or post-op? Has exercise helped?

I didn't realize I was a slow loser untill my last apt with my surgeon (at 5 months) and he was disappointed in me for "only" losing 50 lbs since surgery. I'm terrified to see him next month because I'm a people pleaser (especially with authority figures) and i know it will crush me if I get that same reaponse.

@@MaryC94, pre-op does not necessarily define how you will lose post-op. I lost 15lbs in my two week pre-op diet with no exercise . My surgeon was impressed. I am over 5 months out & have lost 41lbs. my quick weight loss pre-op did not continue post-op. I refuse to stress, I know I'm not working out nearly enough & I'm making the necessary changes.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
