Scale Stuck? Only 2 weeks post-op...

Recommended Posts

In the first 10 days post-op I lost about a pound per day! For the last 3 days, there has been no change ! Arrggh... I walk every day, and yesterday began going back to the gym. My intake has not changed, still taking in mushies and liquids. My fear is that I will remain stuck here for a long time. Anyone experience the same thing? Any advice? Thanks, in advance.

Do you have your doc's ok to be working out this soon??

Right now (the time between surgery and your first fill) is a time for HEALING, not weight loss. It's only been 10 days, and your body is NOT fully healed yet. You need to focus on getting in adequate Protein and Water, and the nutrients you need to HEAL. The weight loss will come.

I'm not a doctor, so I couldn't say with any authority. I would say, however, that it very well could be swelling. And bear in mind that there are people who don't lose any weight (and some even gain a little) before they move on to solid foods. But since solid foods are dangerous to your healing this soon post-op, you shouldn't worry about it just yet. Follow your doc's post-op instructions, and hang in there! It WILL come!

If you're that concerned about losing weight right now, call your doctor, and see what he/she has to say about it.

I can tell you that I was in the exact same boat. However, now it's 17 dyas post op and I did drop a few more pounds. Last week I only lost 2.5 pounds. I think you were hoping that you would continue to lose a pound a day... but, that's 2000 calories per day. My body can only burn 1400 calories in a day (I had a metabolic test) and since I'm consuming about 700 calories then 2 1/2 pounds is exactly what I should lose. Wait the week and see if you lose about that too. I was getting psyched in the beginning... but, it doesn't continue. Be happy with 1-2 pounds a week. (If you don't have that by the end of day 14 then call your doctor. YOu might be getting too many liquid calories.

I am three weeks post op and have been on a plateau for 1 1/2 weeks. I'm on Protein Shakes and Clear Liquids and haven't cheated hardly at all. I figure I am only consuming about 800 calories a day plus I am walking 2 miles/day about 5 times a week. Go figure! I lost weight really fast in the first three weeks ( 2 pre-op & 1 post - op) and then hardly nothing. What gives? I think I am truley weight loss resistent. It's been tough just holding my own and not gaining weight this last week. I wish I had some answers for you.

I was banded April 30th and things went just like you are saying. The weight loss just stopped. I think it has to do with going from liguids to mushies. But when my body got use to it the weight started falling of again. It's been almost 8 weeks ( that includes my 14 day liquid diet for pre-op lost 10lbs then) and i have lost a total of 30lbs. But it is just like everyone else has said that first six or eight weeks is for healing and anything else is a bonus. And you may need to talk to your dr. about the gym. I think it is ok to walk or maybe even run but i don't think you are suppose to be lifting. I guess i just think of the gym as weight lifting. Oh and i think i read somewhere your colon can hold up 5 to 10 pounds gross i know but true. and there is a new book out by Khaliah Ali Mahammed Alis daughter called Fighting weight and she was banded in 2004 and lost 150lbs. I have not been able to put it down. She is a amazeing women. I got it from Amozon .com.

Hey Rachel

The other thing I forgot to mention to you is that MMC Bariatrics might not give you a fill if you are losing weight....by that, they assume that by whatever force of nature (yourself or the band) if you are capable of losing 1-2 lbs/week, they might not give you a fill during your first fill visit. Despite feeling hungry I worked my butt off to keep losing and they would not give me a fill - I had to call in two weeks later to say I didn't lose and needed a fill.

Wow.....you have already lost 47 lbs. That is amazing. My goodness, you just got banded not even a month ago. You are losing more weight than most people do to start. Sure, we would love for it all to fall off in 60 days, but that's not the case. There are people that go weeks and sometimes a month and don't lose. You need to really be proud of 47 lbs. in such a short time. It doesn't look like you need to do anything different. Sometimes getting on the scale repeatedly can cause you to feel down and it definitely is not a true testimony as to what is really going on in your body........not that your losing is slowing down...try weighing only once every two weeks or, once a month.

Congratulations

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
