1 1/2 week post op... fluid and nutritional intake

Recommended Posts

I am unsure as to how much I should be getting in at this point. Yesterday I had a pudding, half a Jello, and probably 16ozs of Fluid. I know I should have 64ozs but that is impossible. I am not hungry and I have a knot in my throat feeling when I have to stop eating or sipping. I drink as much as I can. I tried a Protein Shake on day 7 and couldn't drink it. I will wait until 2 weeks post op to try again.

Keep sipping all day long! The pudding and Jello can also count towards your Fluid requirements. For the next day or so, record everything you drink so you can see exact totals. If you are truly gettin in only 16 oz than a call to the doctor would be in order.

Good Luck!

16 oz is simply not enough. You are probably going to become very dehydrated. Try marching in place while sipping. That helped me some. It was INCREDIBLY uncomfortable to sip for the first couple of weeks for me, but I just pushed through it, because I knew how bad it would be if I got dehydrated.

Perhaps trying different Water temperatures? I also found I was having a hard time swallowing but taking a deep breathe while I was swallowing help to relieve any discomfort. As others have said perhaps put a call in to your surgeon and as to speak with them or their PA an explain your situation. Monitor how many times you urinate and the color I guarantee they will ask because that will dictate to them if you are dehydrated or not. Good luck and keep us updated!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
