Pre-Surgery Behavioral Changes

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am new here, I just had a consult 2 weeks ago but I don't have a date yet because of smoking.

I've been using an electronic cigarette for a week, and with a little luck and lots of hard work I plan on being able to wean myself off of nicotine altogether in a few more weeks.

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any other habits that I should work on changing while I'm waiting to get my date. I definitely don't want pre-surgical life to be a huge shock to the system, so I want to start now.

I was thinking probably cutting out soda/carbonated beverages altogether, eating smaller portions, and 30 min of exercise a day are good ways to start. And yes, I know, one thing at a time :)

I'd love to hear all of your ideas and advice. Thanks!

Cut out vaping and worry about the other stuff later. I had my surgery date in 3 weeks and started cutting vaping to once a day. By the 10 days I didn't do it at all. That alone was so hard, that if I had to add in a perfect diet, I think I would of killed myself. I love food I love vape. Get rid of the latter, post surgery, the food part kind of fixes itself. Without nicotine, your stomach is gonna heal faster and not bleed. Nicotine is the absolute worst thing to put in your body. I was never a analog smoker, but when I started vaping- I developed ulcers and heartburn. This gets worse after surgery. Don't do it. Make quitting your first priority.

I was told to practice eating sloooow. And waiting the 30 min before and after I eat to drink. I did great with all but eating slow. I'm still working on that ;)

Chunkylover53, if you don't mind me asking for my own curiosity- and this is NOT me being rude - what made you decide to start vaping since you weren't a smoker beforehand?

I appreciate the advice. It has been very hard not to smoke and I've had slips, but it also hasn't been as painful as I imagined either.

Elode- That sounds challenging! Good to know, I will get on it! Thanks :)

It's like asking one why they started smoking. I really think a lot of it is genetics. I always had the wanting to smoke desire, and when I did- wow it was like I found my match in heaven. its just not healthy, crap in ecigs tastes poisonous..but that sweet sweet nicotine....

It can be. Especially if you are a fast eater to begin with. Good luck!

Definitely just focus on completely quitting the smoking/vapes. You will be so happy you did.

Most doctors will recommend no sodas/carbonated drinks, so quitting that is a good idea. I also second the practice eating slow. It's much harder than it sounds and even what you may think is slow may not be slow enough.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
