Hi everyone,

I had my records submitted a month ago and am awaiting approval, it is so stressful waiting! I have been on pre diabetic high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am on medication for all of those. I chose the gastric bypass because it has the best co-morbidity rate according to my doctor. I will be honest, I am afraid of the surgery and complications especially with regards to the high blood pressure and my asthma. I have faith I will come through but just scared. I cannot wait to feel better!!!

I look forward to hearing from anyone interested in my journey and I wish you all good health and well being!!

Julie

Thank you for your kind words, unfortunately my request for gastric bypass got denied. We are going to appeal, they said it wasn't medically necessary which I find completely wrong. I am on diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. I have sleep apnea which I have a machine for and not sure but i know my BMI is at least 40. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm rooting for you Julie! I hope they approve your appeal. I went through that when I needed a breast reduction. My first try got shot down by my insurance company but after some hoop jumping the appeal got approved. Good luck! Don't give up.

Mine is in for the review as well. I'm in the same boat totally. Same meds and all. There was a 3 day oversight on the 90day required diet (3days!!!). All I can do is pray they don't deny it. On the other hand while I am waiting I have freaked myself out again. I'm glad you posted and I'm glad this forum is here. It helps. Feel free to reach out. I hope the appeal goes through. *hugs*

I would absolutely appeal that decision. You can send for or print out your insurance policy regarding bariatric surgery. But with a BMI of over 40 and at least 3 co-morbidities you have an outstanding chance. Will your pulmonologist, endocrinologist, cardiologist etc. write letters in support of the surgery. Will they acknowledge this surgery could resolve the medical issues you suffer from? In addition do you have any joint issues? Knees or hips etc...again take a close look at your policy as you may have more medical issues that qualify you, but honestly sounds like you have a great case based on medical necessity. Best of luck Julie...be persistent. Arm yourself with the knowledge of their policy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
