So i went to consultation set to have sleeve. While waiting in wait room and hearing some ladies talk about their rny surgeries and how successful they were and barely any pain. I started 2nd guessing myself. I told dr i wanted sleeve and he said it would work great for me but if i changed my mind to gastric would also be great. I was hoping he would push for one or the other. Ekkk my hopes are to lose 100 lbs with sleeve? He said guarantee 80 with sleeve and 100 with bypass

@@cosmogirl2535 I'm about 4.5 weeks post-op bypass -- I had originally wanted sleeve, which my surgeon agreed would be good for me. Honestly, there was a teeny-tiny voice in my head that said "yea; I'll eventually be able to eat some of my fave foods, just smaller amounts!" The other voice in my head said "I'm scared; I'll eventually be able to eat some of my fave foods" (same reason for both). However, I THEN found out my insurance only covers band and bypass. Back to doctor - he said bypass would be good for me too, and honestly, my little voice said "whew - I can never eat some of those foods" - yes, said, like divorcing someone/something you love, but I now feel confident I'll lose the weight I need to and keep it off. I have about 150 lbs to lose, and am losing at the rate of about 1 lb a day since surgery. I know that w/slow down, but so far, I'm very very happy with my bypass. And like the ladies you hear talking, I really haven't had much pain at all. Biggest problems so far have been fatigue, which starting getting significantly better at about week 3 after surgery, and Constipation, which is an on-going battle with either surgery. I don't know if this is helpful, but best of luck w/your decisiion!

Cosmorgirl2535 had the option of both and my surgeon and I finalize the decision to have RNY do to the fact that i have acid reflex as well as I wanted to loose 162 pounds. So far I am 9 months post opt and have lost 100 pounds , I am confident that I will reach my goal , I had no complications with my surgery and I felt so great that I could have went back to work after 5 days after surgery. You are tired but your body adjust, I also did not want to run the risk of having gerd or more acid reflex resulting in a conversion to RNY I wanted to have surgery only once and to take off only once. I made the best decision and I am so happy that I did and would do it again in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I did not do it sooner. Good luck.

This is exactly where I'm at.... I don't know which surgery to have. I can see pros and cons to each surgery. With the sleeve, I can eventually eat some of the foods I love, which @@della street mentioned. That has me concerned because I might just wind up sabotaging myself down the line. While this is a newer surgery, I don't know about many of the long-term things like success rates, complications, etc.

The RXY from what I have been finding has been around for a long time. It seems to be a more demanding diet, but has the most success. I worry about the long-term effects of Vitamin deficiencies, but know that they can be managed through pills and lab work.

What I'd like to get my hands on is some research and/or articles that outline each of the surgeries in depth. Does anyone know where I might be able to find something like this?

Bypass. It has been around for atl east 30 years and has shown much success. Sleeve is still relatively new with little research on long term success.

That decision depends on so many factors. I chose the sleeve because it was a less risky procedure and I didn't like the idea of having my insides rearranged. I also didn't want to deal with a lifetime of deficiencies because I already had some pre-existing ones like Vitamin D and B12. I WANTED to be able to eat "normally" again after I hit my goal weight, just must smaller portions.

I also needed to lose 100 pounds and I'm down 68 in less than 6 months. I consider that a huge success. I plan on hitting my goal by the end of the year. I'm 100% happy with my decision to have the sleeve.

Hello All,

I started off my journey wanting the gastric band but after attending the 2hr. informational session, I decided that it wasn't for me. Reasons of my own not to offend my friends here and outside who has made this decision and is finding success. I feel in love with the sleeve and was totally determined that I would have this surgery no matter what. After I met with my surgeon, he agreed that the sleeve would be a good choice but gastric bypass is the best choice due to my medical issues (diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and high cholesteral). the gastric bypass will give me the best chance of either ridding me of my medical conditions or eliminate my meds for good. I was shocked because I hadn't done any research about Gastric Bypass becasue I was set on the Sleeve ONLY... I heard nothing else the surgeon said after that. Bewildered, and lost, I spent the whole afternoon researching the different Bariatric surgeries and found what my surgeon said was true. I am afraid of the changes and many sacrifices that must be made but I am so excited about starting a new happy and healthier life. I am learning new things every day from my friend's on this site, personal mentors who have had bariatric surgeries and the surgery center. Yes, it is a hard decision (which surgery to choose) but it is a person to person choice, life style and medical condition. Take this opportunity to research, ask as many questions from the Medical Team, Friends here and listen to you!!!

Happy, Happy days ahead!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
