Sleeve or bypass?!?

So i went to consultation set to have sleeve. While waiting in wait room and hearing some ladies talk about their rny surgeries and how successful they were and barely any pain. I started 2nd guessing myself. I told dr i wanted sleeve and he said it would work great for me but if i changed my mind to gastric would also be great. I was hoping he would push for one or the other. Ekkk my hopes are to lose 100 lbs with sleeve? He said guarantee 80 with sleeve and 100 with bypass???

Wow I'm surprised he can guarantee you any numbers. That's fascinating truth is he can't. He can give you obtainable ranges based on experience but there's absolutely no set guarantee numbers. Now with that being said you have the potential to do great with either surgery if you follow the plan and do your part! As far as which surgery you will have to do your research and figure out which you feel is best for you. Both are life changers. Of course I'm all for the sleeve but I could be a bit bias. 100 pounds is certainly doable with sleeve. If you had significantly more than that to lose, I might advise RNY, but with "only" 100 to lose, either surgery could be successful for you. You should definitely look at all the pros and cons of both and think long and hard about which is the best option for YOU. I agree with the poster above me that there are no guarantees with either surgery. They both require your compliance and hard work.

I've lost 100 pounds since my sleeve surgery on October 8. Have about 40 to go. Not a doubt in my mind I will hit my goal. But, here's the deal. I don't cheat...ever. I don't drink pop, alcohol, no caffeine, and get my calories from good, healthy food. I don't look for ways to get around my sleeve. I also bust my tail at the gym 5 days a week. The sleeve seemed by far the most "natural" procedure. Just my opinion though. I took this surgery VERY seriously. My blood work is optimal now. I no longer have sleep apnea. I feel like a new person. But, as I'm sure you've read, none of these procedures are a silver bullet. You choose what you eat, how much, and how often. But it has definitely served as "guard rails" for me. The sleeve has helped me learn how to eat like a healthy person should. The sleeve also seems to have the fewest complications from what I've read. Bypass patients seem to have an unnatural look to them at times. Again, just my opinion. I'd tell you to make sure you're totally committed t this before moving forward. Good luck.

If you are trying to decide between the two surgeries - consider whether you now have GERD or acid reflux which can be made worse with the sleeve in about 1/3 of patients and largely improved or cured with RNY. If you don't have it you have about a 10% chance of developing it with the sleeve. Some say it resolves in about a year. Do some additional research. It can help with your decision.
