Getting pregnant after 100 pound loss with PCOS

Recommended Posts

I have a question. Before anyone reminds me that I am not a year post op and that I shouldn't get pregnant, I just want to give this info. I was told at my last check up that my weight loss has stabilized. I had the nexplanon birth control implant for the last eight months and I had my period the whole time. I had it removed last week. I was also given the okay to get pregnant by my obgyn. He is well aware that I have had a gastric bypass. For those of you who have PCOS, how hard was it for you to get pregnant after you lost weight? My obgyn said if I'm not pregnant in three months he would start me on Clomid to help me out, but he said since I have lost so much weight that conceiving shouldn't be an issue. Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also have PCOS - but I just started the steps to get my WLS.

I had my appointment with the bariatric doctor today and she was formerly an endocrinologist who worked a lot with PCOS. She said that essentially from surgery day my fertility would be through the roof.

Also, I just wanted to make sure you don't take Clomid from your OB. You should be monitored while taking it, by a Reproductive Endocrinologist, otherwise it could severely affect your fertility. You can't do more than 4-6 courses of Clomid in a lifetime.

Good luck! I'm also counting the day to surgery and then the year after so we can start our own family.

Within two months after the surgery I was on a perfect 28 day cycle that I could almost time to the minute and without any pills controlling it. I loved that!! I was not sexually active for a long time and a month after my activity begin again I was pregnant. Unplanned but meant to be! Healthy pregnancy and extremely healthy baby.

This thread is very informative for me, thank you to everyone who has posted!

I was just approved for gastric bypass so I am just starting all of the pre-op tests, classes, meeting, etc.

I am 32, have PCOS, been married for 7 years and never used birth control. I am hoping WLS is the tool I need to finally accomplish my dream of becoming a mother

Yeah be careful with PcoS and WLs as it can surprise everyone!

Working with our OB/GYn (Scotland here) I was gonna be referred for treatment but fell pregnant naturally - put 60lbs on tho as you do with PCoS.

Best tip is get your Folate checked, I'm pre-op but over ten years trying and sucessful suprise in 2014.

This is great post for me. I'm 38 with PCOS. Just got married 4 months ago and my husband is 40. We both want kids, so this bypass surgery on the 31st will prayerfully bring us our family by year's end.

Danni word of caution - your not recommended to get pregnant for 18 months after surgery - check with your insurance/doctor as you may need to have BC established like some require.

Best wishes

Ok. I'm on the pill now. I'm going to call my GYN tomorrow to see if I can get on a different BC for 18 months. 18 months will be around my 40th birthday so that would be a great gift.

I'm on the nexplanon implant as one thing to think of is tablet intake and getting stuck due to Water intake. Lots of options but best option would be not swallowing anything or having to fiddle with stuff. 10 years with my OB/GYN and she recommended implant for surgery

Ok I will ask my Dr tomorrow about that one. She is happy about the surgery, so I know anything she could do to help, she will. Thanks

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
