Barrett's Esophagus and Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery

Recommended Posts

I have just found out I have Barrett's esophagus with no sign of dysplasia. I really want the sleeve rather than RNY. I just don't want everything rerouted and to have the stomach remnants left behind. Has anyone had successfully sleeve surgery with Barrett's esophagus. I have sent a message to my surgeon to see what his opinion is on this, as it is seen as contraindicative to sleeve surgery, but not universally so.

I was in your shoes and was upset because my doctor pretty much flat out refused to do the sleeve because of it. I continued to research and found the bypass addressed the barretts as well with the elimination of reflux and then some. It completely changed my decision. I also found many who had the sleeve got the revision to bypass due to the gerd. I don't know about you but I'd rather get the cadillac and do it once then to continue and bring my ass into the shop over and over. Im not knockin the sleeve though...I was all for it for a reason and it works with many...just not me.

My surgeon said I had no choice but to get RNY, because of Barretts.

Only thing I can think on this is perhaps if you have hiatal hernia and have that repaired with the sleeve - but honestly, I'd probably get the bypass.

They don't recommend the sleeve to people who have reflux or gerd because when they do the sleeve, the stomach is not aware that 80% of it has been removed and it keeps making acid for a whole stomach.

I have to take an acid blocker, almost 5 years post op. I tried to get off of it, but I had way too many acid problems.

If your gerd can't be controlled with an acid blocker, you should not get the sleeve. I do know several people who have had to revise to RNY (gastric bypass) because of acid problems.

I don't have Barrets yet but have severe reflux and oesophagitis. I wanted the sleeve, but my surgeon refused. He said I would be back to him wanting revisional surgery to gastric bypass down the track and it's much safer to do it right the first time. Since he told me this I have done lots of research and come across a lot of people that have had sleeve then needed bypass.

I would rather just get it right the first time so do some research to put your mind at ease. I am sure sure your dr won't agree to the sleeve

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
