Do I have to give up Coffee? If so, how? Suggestions please!

Recommended Posts

Hi All! I'm 2.5 months post-surgery. I LOVE my coffee, but I have definitely noticed that when I drink it -- even Decaf -- I will get hungry. I know the acidity of it is not helpful. Maybe an antacid would work? Do I have to give it up? Do you have something that you've substituted that you like? Any suggestions with this?

Thanks!

"6 months before surgery, I just stopped drinking It cold turkey and took pain meds for the headache for a few days. Then I got over it. But I'm the type to just rip the bandaid off & get it over with...instead of the slow torture of peeling the bandaid away slowly. "

So, @@ProjectMe what have you substituted for your coffee?

Drink more water! I think it helps ... I am 4 months out and I have a cup of coffee every morning. Then I follow it up with my morning/noon Protein Shake.< /p>

Decaf tea only. I love cinnamon spice and chai. I pour a little chocolate Mootopia or the white Mootopia for extra Protein, then a couple of Splendas. Absolutely love it! Btw, Mootoia is a type of protein infused lactose free milk they sell here in Texas. Not sure if it's sold elsewhere...but I use it to make my Protein Shakes too. It gives an extra 12g of protein per 8 ounces.

I had to give it up. For me it was a good thing because I got to where I was literally drinking nothing but coffee all day. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be for life or just during the healing stage. You will have to ask your surgeon. I did share a small cup with my husband the other day (black) I'm still alive so I guess it was ok! I've never drank black coffee before but it was fine. I defiantly didn't want to add sugar and a ton of Creamer like I use to.

For me, my surgeon told me at my 2 week post op that it was alright to drink no more than 2 cups a day. I put Protein powder in mine with stevia and fat free, sugar free flavored creamer. I feel for me that with the added Protein Powder in my coffee it makes me full and it suppresses my appetite. :D

I have my morning latte everyday, it's sugar free and non fat milk, but it's my go to... I am really hoping I can at least have a tiny one post op.

Good topic. I love coffee. I'm still pre-op, but am now experimenting with Decaf, Protein powders and dairy. Hoping to find a good balance. Never been a tea drinker, but might have to reconsider that path.

I'm one month post and have a small coffee every morning. Sometimes I don't even drink it all, but it is very therapeutic for me to fix it and start my day off with one:)

I drink 3 cups of coffee a day, but I am on omeprarzole, so maybe that prevents me from getting the false-hunger feeling that some people get from acid?

I'm 6 weeks post op and just tried Chike coffee Protein Powder last week. Blend it with ice and ff milk. Just like a frappé oh my goodness! 20 grams of Protein. It does have caffeine though. My sleeve Is totally ok with it! I have 1 every other day for my morning protein. I love it!

Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions!

I hadn't thought about putting some Protein powder in it. That might be good since I gave up my creamer! I also started taking Omeprazole because I was noticing some more acid reactions even without coffee. I think that is helping. I gave it up completely for a couple of months, but, having given up so much else andwith these cold dreary mornings, it's a nice luxury to still be able to enjoy a cup.

Depends on your surgeon. Some say no more coffee... ever. My doctor allows it from the time of discharge after surgery.

I have 2 cups of black coffee in the morning. Never had any problems. But absolutely nothing bothers my sleeve anyway lol

I was allowed coffee at 30 days post-op, but advised to add cream or milk. My nutritionist didn't want me drinking it black, since it's harder on the stomach. I put two ounce of soy milk in mine. Two extra grams of Protein that way! I tried using protein powder instead of creamer and it was.... not good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
