I was wondering is there are people out here that have had the WLS and not had any complications? It just seems that where ever I am...there is always someone talking about the horrible complications they've had or are experiencing. I'm sort of feeling like an island...

I never had any complications! I only dump with greasy/fatty/processed foods. Other than that I've followed the diet for 20months and have lost 196 lbs

Angelinnc32,

Thanks for your response. I guess there are 2 of us in the world... ;) You can come visit my island anytime. Congrats on your loss. I figure I'll be around 190-200 down by next December.

I suppose at my age I really don't worry about that stuff. I wear what I want and if people don't like it...that's ok too....lol My island is worry free and I think I have a bathing suit shop to cover anyone the way they want. :D

That's awesome. I don't care about what others think but I am very nervous. I like it when I look in the mirror and enjoy looking at myself!

I don't have any problems. I am almost 2 yrs out in May. Lost 115 lbs, can eat anything just in small amounts. I do dump on fatty/greasy things so I avoid them. But loving life.

I'm coming too!

By grace, I've had no complications. Everything about this process has been smooth sailing. Fingers crossed. I have to make sure the first few bites of food are slow slow slow otherwise I'm fine. I haven't eaten anything that would cause dumping yet but if it did happen I would consider it a perk not a complication. LOL :)

I consider myself very lucky.

Whatchu calling this island?

No complications either. Couple foods have given me trouble when I reintroduced them but that's too be expected. I do get "dumping" but not like it was described to me but def enough so that I do not want to eat said food or drink which is fine! I am only 6 months into the process & I am loving my new life, loving how active I am now. Best thing ever!

That's awesome. Not feeling so alone anymore. I had my 3 month check up with my doc and nut and they said I'm doing great. They actually had me cut back on my Vitamins because everything was coming back high. lol Leave it to me to get everything backwards. I'm down 85 pounds right now and stalling. However, this too shall pass....so not worrying about it. MisforMimi, I'm not sure what the island is called.I think we should have a contest for the name. The winner can be president for a day. ( Of course we have to trade off each day to make it fair...lol)

This post is funny! I was glad to read it though...I'm still in the pre op stage and trying to decide rather to go with the bypass or sleeve. I am apprehensive about the bypass because I'm afraid of the unknown...for some reason I just picture myself being a bloated nauseous mess most of the time...I know that is probably far from the reality but that's what I associate the rerouting with.

Reading you all's stories gives me hope that I can possibly have this surgery and not feel "sick" for the rest of my life.

Did any of you feel that way when you were trying to decide? And what made you go with the bypass over the sleeve?

Do you feel nauseous or sick a lot or is this just in my head lol! Do any of you wish you would have had the sleeve instead?

@@Martene81, I was crazy with worry until about a month before my procedure. I just knew I would be some new breed of human in which the gastric bypass would not work. In addition, I was going to die from anesthesia so it didn't matter anyway. And if by some stroke of luck I made it out alive, I was going to be permanently paralyzed from hair loss, broken bones due to losing the mineral density in my bones due to the malabsorption!!!! My mind was insane!

As I said this process has been great! I hate being nauseous and I told my doc to send me home with strong anti nausea meds! I've used them once, when I *thought* I was getting nauseous. My nose has gotten sensitive so it has pretty much been spot on with what NOT to eat. If it sounds or smells like a bad idea then it probably is. I just go with that now.

Many people don't have complications with the sleeve and some do. I've have 3 people with sleeves tell me they wish they had had the bypass. All do to GERD and reflux complications.

There are pros and cons and risks to every surgery. The benefits should outweigh risks. Success can be achieved with any surgery.

Good Luck!

Martene, I wanted the sleeve...but the powers to be in Canadia decided I wanted the RnY. My problem wasn't that I didn't eat healthy...it was that I ate WAY too much. I use to be able to down 1 large pizza no problem!. Now I can eat a small piece...lol All I wanted the surgery for was to use as a tool for Portion Control. Both types do that. After 3 months, I'm actually ok with the bypass. I wasn't scared going in...I was excited to finally have it done. I was concerned about malnutrition....don't have any. I must be an enigma. Anyway, I'm happily eating whatever I want...( healthy of course)...and dropping weight like crazy. Either surgery will help you. Honestly, it's a personal choice. For lack of a better way to say it..."go with your gut". Research both options and talk to your doc. Based on your health and body...you will know which one is best for you. Keep posting...I want to know how you're doing.. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
