BAND TO SLEEVE REVISION QUESTION

Recommended Posts

Good Morning Sleevers!! I have a question regarding the ability to eat without effort 4 oz. of food. I feel that I can easily eat more but, stop myself at that point. My surgery date was 9 Feb 15, so, I am about 2 1/2 weeks out. I started soft foods 1 week after surgery (fish, tuna, green beans). I guess each Surgeon is different. My surgery was completely pain-free and, though I am off work for 6 weeks, I could have gone to work the same week. I am losing fine (hit a stall now but, not too worried) but I am concerned that if I am able to eat so much now, in a month I will be eating a much larger portion. Also, it takes me about 5-10 minutes to eat meal. I have forced myself to slow down to minimum of 20 minutes. I can drink 32 oz of Water in about 5-10 minutes too. I can't eat salads yet. Sorry for the long post!!

My actual question is: Are you or were you able to eat so much 2 1/2 weeks out or, is this due to my having a revision?

Let me give an sample of a days worth of food:

1st meal: Protein Shake 11 oz. mixed in my Decaf coffee about 10 oz.

30 minutes later: water, water, water

2nd meal: 1 scrambled egg with 1 oz. of chicken and laughing cow wedge

water

3rd Meal: 4 oz. grilled chicken breast w laughing cow wedge or chicken salad w light mayo

30 minutes later: water, water, water 32-40 oz.

4th Meal: 4 oz. grilled chicken breast, 4 green Beans

water w Crystal Lite

5th meal: Protein shake or string cheese with 1 slice of budding turkey wrapped around

water, water, water

I haven't started on solid Protein but I feel like I'm starting to eat more but I still don't think its enough. I was sleeved on 2/4 and only lost 11 pounds . my sample day :

7:00am - Protein shake

10:00 - 2 oz cheese

12:00 - 2 oz chicken salad ( I wanted more but I took what was left in the bowl - this was in our cafeteria at work) and 1/4 cup chicken broth

2:00 - 2 oz cheese

4:00 - tsp of Peanut Butter

6:00 - 3 ground chicken meatballs and a sugar free snack Pack pudding

I only got in 40 oz of Water between meals

The way the sleeve works, you may not "feel" things accurately the first 6-8 weeks. Nerves are cut and take time to heal. I was advised to measure, and eat by the clock those early months. For me, my maximum "appetite control" was in the 2-7 month post op range.

I think it is important to note that the sleeve does not rely as much on "restriction" as the band. It is more like you have a normal stomach that is way smaller and has less hunger. It isn't that "tight/pain" kind of feeling many experience with the band.

I counsel anyone to practice the exercise of not "seeking full" but rather seeking "not hungry" once you are past those initial healing weeks

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
