Help always hungry!

Recommended Posts

When I complained about being hungry, my doc told me that hunger is often thirst in disguise. So I increased my Fluid intake and it really helped! Now I drink 120+ ounces of Fluid per day, and it keeps my sleeve pretty satisfied.

I agree with eating every few hours, otherwise I'd be in trouble. I start my day off with a Protein shake. Then a couple of hours later cottage cheese mixed with walnuts and a few berries (or just use cinnamon). Then for lunch turkey cheese roll up. If I'm still hungry, I have bell peppers with ranch dressing (I use ranch powder and mix with greek yogurt and add unflavored Protein Powder to it) or a tiny guava after the Protein. Everything starts with protein and then veggies....I barely have fruit. I've just started to have apples with PB2 and a dash of cinnamon if I want something sweet.

Also, what others have said....if I'm hungry, usually have some Water.

Hope that gives you some ideas :)

My dietician has me have a small snack an hour before bedtime, a combination of Protein and 'good' carbs. I(I go with almond butter on a banana, an apple, or whole wheat toast). I've been doing this for years actually, it's standard for people who have Type 2 diabetes, which I have (although with my weight loss I no longer need medication or even a diabetic diet). If you keep it limited, keep it nutritionally balanced, and keep it healthy, it might help your hunger without derailing your progress.

I'm six months post-op and there is still NO WAY I could eat that much food in one sitting. I can only do 2-4 oz. of meat at a time. No room for sides at all. If I tried to work in veggies or starches, it would be at the expense of Protein and then I wouldn't be able to get my 100 grams of Protein in.

I agree. I always freak out that maybe I can eat too much at this stage. But when I think about it, I ate 6 medium shrimp last night for dinner. That's it, that's all I had room for. No way I could fit in a side of anything. I will sometimes try to wait 10-15 mins to eat some vegetables but I'm usually counting down till I can drink something so that doesn't happen either.

You can always try using this: http://smile.amazon.com/Meal-Measure-Portion-Control-Tool/dp/B004Z0SDXC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425648689&sr=8-1&keywords=bariatric+plate at each meal. I don't use it myself, but I came across it while shopping for bariatric Vitamins and supplements on Amazon.< /p>

I was looking at my surgeons/nutritionist plan yesterday for 31 days post-op, it says - 3 small meals and 2 Snacks, 2 Starch servings, 2 fruit servings etc... - I realized I was not getting all the food in. Plus, their plan came with 3 different options, 1000 calorie, 1200 calorie or 1500 calorie. Now I'm trying to up my food intake to reach the 1000 calorie a day plan.

I ate more at first. It took my brain a while to get out of the over eater mode. Now a year out I have less or little hunger. It could be mild heartburn. It can seem like hunger. Carbs and starch won't fill the sleeve, they slip through. Fish and chicken will be filling and last longer. I use Greek yogurt to curb old cravings. But watch the sugar. The weight loss or gain shouldn't be a concern yet but knowing your eating too much is just something to be mindful of. I still have to mentally work at it everyday. I agree with the fluids as well. The bakery would make me nuts. So good luck:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
