How do you get your protein in? I am just started my 4th week post op.

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I had my vsg on 2/2 and was given the ok to start soft food last week however I am not even coming close to 60 grams of Protein per day. My NUT wants us to get from food only and not Protein drinks but how? I have a call out to her but in the mean time I would love some suggestions from others.

Thank you!

When I was on soft foods, it was a lot of eggs and dairy. I was allowed Protein shakes, but I was supposed to be getting 100g of Protein in so I was definitely getting 60 or so from real food. I had scrambled eggs with cheese melted on top, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Shelly's Baked Ricotta, string cheese....

Once I was allowed some meat, I would do shredded chicken (big fan of Jack Daniel's shredded chicken!) or tuna salad. When I was allowed ground meats and legumes, I would do chili or turkey meatballs.

Hope that helps some!

eggs and cheese are good 'soft' sources of Protein. I love making egg drop Soup still; the Soup always seems to go down easily.

With purees, I used alot of sauce to keep the Protein moist. I sometimes ate the protein as one meal and a snack a few hours apart. Great sauces are like alfredo sauce, Ragu double cheddar, thai peanut/coconut sauce, etc.

I also learned to love cottage cheese, which is great with herbes de provence or italian herbs, or even mixed with eggs or tofu.

Tuna/chicken salad, chili (run through a blender it's still tasty). the WW smart ones Entrees, once you're allowed them, are quite good. When I'm coming up for a recipe or looking at nutrution labels I aim for 10 calories / gram of Protein. I don't hit that with everything I eat, but with most things. Yogurt is your new friend - fat free low sugar yogurt is packed with Protein. I've also taken a piece of turkey sausage (get the leaner stuff) and fried that up with a scrambled egg. kinda like a "Breakfast bowl" but actually edible :)

My surgeon & NUT never said I couldn't have shakes. I still have 1 on most days. I have a friend that had her Sleeve surgery 4 years ago & she still drinks a shake a day. I do eat a lot of eggs, cheeses, chicken & tuna. Good thing I like these foods.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
