Baraitric Surgery and Insurance

Recommended Posts

I mailed out my packet last week. I received an email yesterday stating they had received my forms and had to verify my insurance availability so it could take 4 to 6 weeks before I am able to make my first appointment. How long did everyone else have to wait to make their first appointment? How long did the whole process take until ur surgery date? Did you have trouble with getting your insurance approval?

took me 2 months to get my intitial appointment only because the surgeon is so busy then it took me three months almost to the day to get all my testing in, psych appointments etc.

My first step in my whole process was to call and make an appointment. I met with a 'patient advocate' who told me basically what to expect (very condensed version) and that they would verify my insurance coverage. I made the pysch appt, the appt with the nutritionist, and had my blood work done. All that probably was done over a couple of weeks and the biggest lag was me getting around to doing my blood work. Oh, also I had to do a sleep test to see if I had apnea. From that point they told me it could take 4-6 weeks to get approved It was probably exactly 4 weeks and I met with the surgeon for a pre-op appt and surgery was scheduled about 10 (maybe??) days later. I would say my overall process was super fast and was about 2 months. I feel very lucky. I have already paid off the portion insurance didn't cover (Thanks Uncle Sam!) which was about 2k.

My first appt. was an Orientation Session. It took maybe 3 weeks. It was a group session.

Posted too soon. My whole process would have taken 7 months but was delayed because I needed an unrelated surgery. I would suggest contacting your insurance company directly and get requirements from them. Insurance requirements typically dictate the time frame and what you have to go. So any answers you get here will vary significantly.

I had my initial info session last March, around the 15th. I saw the surgeon April 8th. I had jumped through all the hoops they required for surgery by the end of August.

Due to insurance snafus, I am finally having my surgery this Monday. So, it took me almost 11 months from start to finish.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
