optional insurance for mexico elective vsg

Recommended Posts

Both my health plans don't cover bariatric surgery. My state doesn't mandate bariatric coverage. As a result I am looking at going with Corvala at hospital Angeles in Tijuana. If I have post op complications I believe my two health plans won't cover post op complications. Does anyone know of separate insurance policies I could buy that would cover post op elective surgery complications for vsg,

I'm not plugging the company below but I noticed that they do offer policies to cover complications from elective plastic surgery. I intend to see if they and or othe companies offer optional policies to cover post op complications from elective vertical sleeve gastrectomy VSG in Mexico. My tentative plans are to use Dr. Corvala at Hospital Angeles in June. I am concerned that if I return to the U.S. and have post op complications would my primary and secondary health policies in the U.S. give me a difficult time about payment for post op complications if my procedure was considered elective and in mexico.

If anyone has any experience or thoughts regarding this I would appreciate your comments.

Here is another company with the type of insurance policy I'm referring to and there are several other companies that offer this coverage. What put me onto this is that Dr. Kelley who is a bariatric surgeon in Tijuana does VSG surgery sometimes at Hospital Angeles and other places in the TJ area offers Medical Tourism insurance as part of his package for an extra 250 dollars. It seems to me that it would be money well spent to have this coverage in case I get back to the u.s. and develop vsg related complications. I have a feeling my primary and secondary health insurance companies in the u.s currectly covering me would give me a hard time about paying for any complications related to an elective vsg. i would have better piece of mind having surgery in Tijuana if I had a policy like this to cover large unforseen medical bills due to vsg complications when i get back to the u.s. Note that I'm not pluging any of these companies. Just wondering if others have experience buying these type of policies for vsg surgery in Mexico.

You should try contacting your insurance company(s) directly to ask if post-op complications would be covered. I was assured they would when I contacted my insurance. The comparison they gave me was that it's like smoking. People choose to smoke and their insurance covers medical complications due to smoking. It's the same with people choosing to have elective surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
