I didn't get my surgery date until 10 days before the actual surgery, so I never was able to do the full two week liquid diet. It didn't seem to matter much. I just made sure I stuck strictly to what was required during those 10 days so that I could have a successful surgery. And I did. I wish you luck!

WL: did you have to go through six months if supervised weight loss prior to your surgery date?

I had to do 6 months prior which really turned out to be 5 months because they used my surgeon/nutrition visit as one of the weigh ins...It all depends on the insurance, I know people who only had to do 3 months or no months of supervised weight loss at all before surgery. My surgery date is tomorrow!

I was told 10 days, so it should be fine. I cheated a little today and ate some cheese and an egg.

personally, i think starting a couple of days late is fine...but i'm not always the best rule follower on this one ...you will find people who tell you that you aren't ready if you wont' give up those two days, but i don't believe that either.

I didn't have to do 6 months of supervised weight loss or any for that matter. My bariatrician said that I didn't have to lose weight before surgery. Although I wish he did because it would have gotten me closer to goal. I had a list of surgery prequesits that took 9 months to complete. Those 9 months seem to take forever.

I have a feeling that the doctors figure in that most of their weight loss patients will cheat a bit. So, if one actually needs a week, they will require two weeks of pre-op dieting. I think they figure in that they are dealing with people who have weight and food issues, and compensate for that. But that is only a guess. At any rate, ASK your surgeon first, and then follow what he/she says. Also figure in that they have heard it all before, and you will not be the first one to ask.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
