Sleep studies & now the wait begins for insurance approval...

Recommended Posts

Hello! So, I have had 2 sleep studies, one with mask, one without. Turns out I have moderate apnea. They said the average "events",(meaning losing/holding breath) for mild is 5-15 times, moderate is 16-25, and severe is 26+ and I averaged 16.9. So, I guess they are suggesting a mask at home. I asked the woman at the sleep study if I will need to buy one in order to get approved for the surgery and she said it depends on the doctor. I will need to ask Dr. Jay. She said since I am on the cusp of mild/moderate I may not HAVE to get one.

On another note, my last nutrition appt was on Feb 17 and they sent my papers off to the insurance company the same day. And now the wait begins... All these thoughts are going through my mind like, what if they dont approve me? What if they dont think I NEED the surgery? What if all of my hopes and plans for this surgery just go down the drain? Im going try not to think about it. Just hope for the best and say whatever will be, will be. =))

Mine was also moderate, and I did have to get a cpap machine. Now I actually sleep all night long, and wake up refreshed, where before I woke up tired. Cpap masks have come a long way, and not all of them look or feel like torture devices. lol Mine is cute and pink and I use the "belle loops" just around my ears to keep the nose mask on. I can sleep on my side or stomach and no issues. You get used to not breathing through your mouth VERY quickly. But once I have the surgery and lose the weight, I wouldn't be sad to give the dang thing back. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
