Weight watchers post op

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done weight watchers post op? I am 18 months out and have gained 9 pounds. I know it's not a lot but weight watchers is running a promotion and I was thinking of trying it out post op. I am really struggling with hunger and I think this might help give me some structure. Or will it not work on people who have had the sleeve because of our metabolism? I don't know the points seem like a lot. Any thoughts? I've been tracking with MFP and need to stay at about 1300 cal to maintain with daily exercise but lately my calories are creeping higher as the hunger becomes more and more demanding. I'm not the lucky one who lost their hunger mine has been with me since the get go and it's not acid because I've tried all kinds of acid blockers they make no difference.

I don't know if Weight Watchers is right for WLS patients. They encourage a lot of carbs. And your suspicion is correct, most of us can't eat as many calories as they allow and still lose weight.

If you can find the original Weight Watcher's diet, that would be much better.

When I was preparing my weight loss/diet journal for my insurance pre-op, I contacted WW for my past history data. The woman I spoke to said that they have many post-op WLS patients in their program. I would hope that they would be clued in to the diet of a WLS patient, but I know that I went to WW for the support system more than having someone tell me what to eat. That alone may be what you need from WW. Just a thought.

Thank you! I think the accountability of the weigh ins might be useful.

I thought about going to weight watchers or OA. I've never attended either before and they are the only weight loss support groups offered in my area. Like mentioned previously, I was interested in getting support for weight loss, not particularly following their diet.

This is a little off the subject, but how long do we have to follow the high Protein diet? I just read "The Zone" and was thinking about following that type of eating plan once I hit maintenance. The Zone diet is still high Protein, but consists of a MUCH higher carb content than I am eating now. I tend to stall when my carbs go over 15 grams daily.

I think we are supposed to follow high Protein and protein first for life. I know I have been letting carbs creep in and that is the culprit.

I know an RNY'er who has done WW for years. I know she doesn't do carbs and is in the size 6 range. She follows the diet but it is very much modified to lean protein/fresh fruit & veggies.

Thanks I ended up joining because I need the accountability for weigh ins. Plus once I hit goal which will be in several weeks it will be free if I maintain. It's actually very similar to what I was doing. They gave me 26 points which is roughly about 1300 calories. I was thinking it would be more because in the past I had 44 points. But that's when I weighed almost 300 pounds.

I've thought about joining up, but it would have to be online, which sort of takes away the part where you are accountable for the weight loss - no weigh ins. Will have a look to see if there are any places near by me that do it.

I did it when I was about 15-16 mo post-op, for about a month. I gained 8#. The diet & calorie amounts are completely inappropriate for my diet/body. But I'm a HARD loser & a quick gainer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
