Rumbling stomach when I sip liquid

Recommended Posts

I've been lurking around this site since before my surgery and have found it to be helpful. Now, I need to see if anyone else is having this issue.

I had a RNY on January 22 nd....complications afterward of bleeding in my pouch resulting in six units of blood. I'm fully recovered from the events and feeling great except for one thing....my stomach churns and rolls every time I sip liquids. I think it's hunger pangs. I'm in my third phase of the program which is soft food. I've followed the guidelines strictly without cheating. I stop drinking at least 30 minutes before eating and wait 60+ minutes afterward. I eat Protein first and stop when I feel full. But since I started the transition from puréed to soft food I have had this rumbling. If I don't drink it's fine and I feel satisfied. I am finding it to be a challenged to get my Water in with this annoying effect.

An one else have such a sensation? I'm pretty strong minded, but don't know if I can ignore this the rest of my life! Plus, I'm worried my stoma may have stretched or something crazy has happened??

I had that happen too, but much earlier on after surgery. It was loud enough that people could hear it! I also thought that I wasn't sure if I'd be able to put up with it, but thankfully it stopped after a few weeks. Hope it does for you too :)

I had RNY in Aug 14 and I'm resolved to the fact my stomach will always make loud noises.

I have the "gurgling" as I call it as well. It is usually when my stomach is empty and I am trying to get a bunch of Water in because I am behind. As I recall, it took much less to get the gurgling early on. I am 3 weeks out. Small sips do not gurgle anymore. It is when I am taking larger drinks too fast and probably getting some air in.

I would give it a couple more weeks for your pouch to settle down from all the trauma and then see if it is still happening with sips. Hopefully you can move on to more normal size drinks and they will go down just fine.

I am definitely one of those people who's grouch pouch makes noise. Liquids definitely make more noise than solids. It is loud enough for my husband to hear it.

For me it has nothing to do with hunger at all, it just makes noise. The reality is I have gotten very used to it and don't even notice unless hubby starts chuckling, then I realize it is happening.

It is not bothersome and not so loud that everyone can hear it, he just happens to be sitting next to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
