Getting Cold Feet ~ Surgery Only 2 Days Away

Recommended Posts

Ok here is the deal, two years ago in October, I had the VGS with some success. My HW was 297, SW was 265. I dropped 92 pounds and was happy. However I got complacent and stop following my diet and all but eliminated my exercise plan. I started gaining wait back. 45# in one year, not good.

To say my symptoms returned, is an understatement. I met with my PCP and he suggested seeing my surgeon again to try to fix the problem vs. giving me more Rx to treat my symptoms.

I do have really bad reflux that I have been hospitalized for 2 times. It is getting worst. My doctor told me that statically the RNY would correct most of my issues and as a bonus, I would loose weight.

Here is my problem. Did I give the VGS a fair run? Did I do all I could have done? With the RNY, what if I become complacent again. There is no "next" surgery. The RNY is the final step.

I know I need this but I am freaking out and reaching for any excuse not to do this.

Suggestions to relax and stay focused on my goal and get through surgery on Monday.

I believe with acid reflux the best option is the RNY. I was told you would have issues with acid reflux with a VSG. It wouldn't ease your symptoms but may make it worse. I too was going to do the VSG but I wanted the chance of optimal weightloss so I decided on the RNY.

I had severe acid reflux before my RNY surgery, but none since. After the surgery, I completely lost my hunger. It was not hard to drop the weight when hunger is not constantly gnawing at your bones. So this weight loss process was very different than a diet. I am currently 21 months post op and my weight is fairly level. I am told that by the nutritionist, that the main reason why people after the operation gain weight is because they go back to grazing. So if you can limit your grazing or control what you graze on (limit carbs) you will probably do fine.

I was specifically told by my surgeon that the sleeve is not a good option for me because of my reflux. He always recommends RNY to patients with reflux/GERD.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
