Stomach Issues Due to Pregnancy After Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I got pregnant 5 months after sleeve surgery. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal even though I was told to wait at least a year to 18 months. But, now I get it! I've had stomach discomfort throughout my pregnancy. I'm 19 weeks and still suffering from morning sickness. My OB/GYN thinks it's from my stomach being smaller. When I eat until I am full, not stuffed but just full, I then get nauseous and have to fight real hard not to throw it all back up. Sometimes it works but too often it doesn't. It also seems like I am not eating much but I feel full really fast. It's extremely uncomfortable and so is the acid reflex I seem to get after drinking liquids. Has anyone experienced anything similar and do they have any advice?

Congratulations on your pregnancy and the weight loss success. So sorry that you're experiencing the discomfort and pray that it will subside soon. Hang in there and press the OB/GYN and even the bariatric surgeon for more ways to deal with the issue to ensure you and the baby get the adequate nourishment. Besides, you need to be shopping for baby stuff. :-)

Thank you for the well wishes on the pregnancy. I am very excited as this is my first baby but I wish I felt better. I was prescribed naseau medication, which has helped a lot. It makes me very sleepy though and it doesn't help with the stomach upset and digestion issues. It also hasn't worked 100% to keep me from vomiting but it has reduced the frequency. I am on the same regimen of Vitamins prescribed after surgery and all of my Vitamin levels have been tested and are good. I've finally stopped losing weight as of two weeks ago so I'm not worried about not getting enough calories. I just want not to feel bad every time I eat or drink. I may contact my bariatric surgeon if I am still having issues by the end of 20 weeks to see if she has any suggestions.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
