LETTER OF MEDICAL NECESSITY

Recommended Posts

Newbie here . . .

I met with my PCP on Tuesday to have the very difficult discussion about deciding to try to have sleeve surgery. My mind was already made up because I'd attended the initial seminar, met with surgeon and started nutrition classes. However, the PCP needed to write my letter of medical necessity. I was fearful of meeting with her since she's not overweight, nor has she ever been a big proponent of any sort of weight loss aid (other than diet/exercise). When I did meet with her Tuesday, I was very open to hear her concerns but informed her that this should be my decision and although I appreciate her professional opinion, this is something that I've thought long and hard about. I told her that I wanted this new lease on life and that this would not be a quick fix for me. I am happy to report that she did agree to write the letter and to my surprise . . . her office called yesterday to tell me that the letter was ready and that I could pick it up or they could fax it. Fax it? Um, no . . . I'll pick it up. Thank you very much!!! I sat in my car, read the letter and then called my husband crying. I felt like I just won the lottery! May seem silly to some but I was afraid that getting her to write the letter would Never happen. So excited.

Congratulations! Not every PCP is on board with bariatric surgery. The other sad part of that is that a lot of them also have insufficient up-to-date training on human nutrition and can only hand you the USDA food pyramid which is horrifically carb heavy and out-dated.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
