Protein level effecting weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I have an immune deficiency that was discovered because my Protein lvl (presurgery) was consistently low. It turns out that immunoglobulins are just Proteins...And since mine were severely deficient, it showed up in a normal blood test. Despite many treatments, my lvl stayed low. After surgery and losing about 50lbs my immunoglobulin level rose significantly. I also noticed that I would always lose my weight right after an infusion (big boost of immunoglobulins (protein).

For some odd reason, my immunoglobulin levels have plummeted again (back to presurgery levels). And with it, my weight loss has completely stalled. I've tried eating less, eating more, getting active but nothing is helping.

I know that my particular situation is extreamly rare, however I also know that with weight loss surgery people can get protein deficieny. So I'm curious, for those of you who have dealt with protein deficiency, did you notice a stall with your weight loss during this time? Did things pick back up once the deficiency was corrected?

Thanks proudgrammy..... my drs seem to be clueless. My surgeon has no idea about my immune system issues and my immunologist doesn't know the weightloss surgery stuff. Admittedly I havnt asked him about this issue so I will try when I see him next.

I was hoping someone here had experience with it too. Looks like not.

Sorry, but I know nothing about this. Couldn't you get your two doctors on the phone together for a consultation -- to collaborate?

Very best to you!

Even if the immunologist doesn't have experience with WLS patients, he's probably dealt with many overweight patients concurrently trying to lose weight. I would think whatever his recommendations there would apply to you. The good thing is, with WLS you're always supposed to focus on getting your Proteins in first, so at least what you're doing is not at odds with your goal.

It's tough to have a weird syndrome in addition to having WLS I'm sure. Focus on the fact that a) you've lost weight and are already much healthier than before

b)you might not have discovered this immune deficiency otherwise, until it caused severe problems to your health

Best of luck!

Vsgann- yes that would be nice. If I don't get any answers I'll suggest it to one of them. Probably my immunologist because he's all about working with other docs.

Drmeow- that's a very good point. I'm starting a new treatment soon so I'll make an appointment and try to pick his brain.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
