March 5th surgery! things I'm doing to get ready

Recommended Posts

Hello! March 5th is my date, bright and early in the morning.

This Thursday I start my pre op diet to help shrink liver. Pretty standard for WLS.

Of course I am nervous, but I have found that if I "embrace" what I am doing.... and do what I can to research and prepare myself, it lessons my fear and helps me feel empowered. I know that I don't have a choice to not have the surgery if I want to live an extended life . One with out health problems.

Feeling good about your surgeon and the hospital makes a big difference . I am fortunate to have an excellent surgeon and at a "center off excellence" hospital :)

I am having my house cleaned the day before I go in, fresh sheets on the bed for when I come home. I am stocking up on my waters, Soups that will be mixed with Protein , and sugar free pop cyles.. that's for the first two weeks.

I am also looking for ways to "pamper" myself through the hospital "experience" . I feel like I might as well make the best if it!

I bought a new night gown and bathrobe to take to the hospital. I'm bringing my own pillow and a fuzzy throw for the bed. And of course my own toiletries , cell phone and charger. I"m bringing a sound machine that has nature sounds. I like the white noise to lull myself to sleep. If you have someone to rub your feet or back, lotion would be helpful too.

I am very blessed to have an awesome and supportive husband :P

Your doing something positive and wonderful for yourself by having this surgery, your taking care of yourself!!

I'd love to hear about any other tips and suggestions that any one of you would have :)

I bought a fun espresso mug that's about an ounce, the amount of liquid the doctor's allow us to start drinking (over the course of an hour). I've also got some tiny silver spoons that I'm going to shine closer to for when I start eating again, I'm so very excited to crack them out and give them a go! I'm also planning on using fun dishes like tea cups and sugar bowls to add some fun to the process.

I just got through a hip replacement surgery so I know for me keeping it simple works best. Phone, sweats, and toothbrush and I am ready to conquer the world. Only pre planning is cooking up some meals to freeze for the family so I don't have to worry about it for a few weeks.......And my phase one food/liquid items of course. No pre op diet required but I cut out sugar and caffiene this week on my own.

I got my new date for March 12th! I stocked up on broths, and Decaf teas, and ice pops, and Protein powders/shakes. I got my night gowns, alcohol wipes, tums, gas strips and Spanx for after surgery - my dr said it would help to keep everything together afterwards, as well as keep my pants from rubbing against the incisions.

The only thing I'm trying to figure out is how I can prepare pureed meals for my soft foods stage and freeze them until the time comes. Anyone have any good recipes or suggestions?

Hi Sarahbeth;-)

I'm having my surgery here in Seattle at Virginia Mason hospital. My Dr. Is Dr. Chang. And I tell you that the only way that I can be at ease with all of this is because of the hospitals credentials and reputation along with my Drs.

I picked up my two week pre op diet... Ugh, good thing it's only for 2weeks! My poor husband LOL! Luckily I can have all the salad and carrots I want along with sugar free hello, yum! Oh well, sigh, it's for a good reason. Seems we tend to have " fatty livers" and the docs have an easier time in there if our livers aren't in the way. I'm thinking the next two weeks will actually be the hardest of all.

keep me posted

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
