Vegetarians & Vegans

Recommended Posts

I am 6 months post op at the end of this month and have lost 103 lbs so far. Have about 40-50 more to go to get to my goal. I used to be vegetarian/vegan and find myself wanting to get back to that lifestyle often. Any post op veg people have suggestions on getting the minimum 60g of Protein required without the meat and without feeling like I'm having to eat constantly in order to meet that requirement? I'm still at the point that getting 60g is a struggle because I literally cannot eat that much food.

I'm no longer vegetarian either, but I tend to eat less meat still. I'm not allowed carbs at all, so on veggie days my diet has been lots of eggs, cheese (low fat sting cheese is my favorite), cottage cheese, beans/lentils, and Greek yoghurt. Looking at my food log, I can get 60-70 grams of Protein those days.

Only five weeks ago. My surgeon/nutritionist say no carbs/sugars for a year, and only limited veggies after two months. No starch or sugar veggies (potatoes, winter squash, green peas, etc). So I pretty much eat pure Protein. Oh, tofu is a great option as well... I've done Thai curry with lots of tofu in broth, and eaten out at Chinese and had tofu and eggplant. Ok, technically the eggplant was a cheat for me, but tasted awesome. I'm down almost 50 pounds thus far.

I was vegetarian for twenty years. I started eating meat again because I was tired of cooking multiple meals at a time for my carnivorous husband and kids. I'm also thinking about moving back that way--I'm now eating my own thing anyways.

How about quorn?

I use that all the time and the Protein is really good.

I also use quark (zero fat, high protein) with a bit of milk and a bit of banana.

Lentils, Beans etc - I just shove extra bits in any meal so that it all adds up x

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
