Best Protein powders for a limited budget

Recommended Posts

I need to get 75-90 grams of Protein a day. I really need to start getting into buying the big powder drinks. Anyone that's post op have any suggestions? Now I've been drinking muscle milk and milk and 3 oz of protein a day.. That's not close to what's needed and MM is expensive and only 20g..

Please list powders you've tried and/or ways to hit the daily requirements..

By the way I'm 6 days post op..

One of the unfortunate truths about WLS is that we will spend a lot of money post op on Protein as well as our supplements. I just don't think buying forms of Protein that really isn't suited for us to save a few dollars is worth it. MM is a good brand, but better ones, especially for newly op'd folks are specifically made for bariatric patients. Bariatric Advantage, Bariatric fusion, unjury are a few I use without question.

Good luck!

I agree with @@jmccape on the Syntrax nectar Protein. In my opinion, I think it is the best tasting Protein with no sugar/no carbs. I upped my protein to around 120 grams a day and supplement with 1-2 shakes a day. I have tried the chocolate, vanilla, and the Cappuccino and loved all of them. I mix with soy milk and Water instead of skim milk and love it!

I buy Syntrax Nectur in the individual packages ($1.99 ea.) from The Vitamin Shoppe & Amazon. This way I can try different flavors. They run about 24 grams ea. I then mix these packages with Silk/Soy milk & get another 6 grams. I also use the Premier Protein shakes in Strawbery & chocolate. They have 30 grams of Protein & cost just over $2.00 a serving. You can get these from their website, from costco or Krogers. Other grocery stores sell it & Premier Protein's web site will tell you who sells it in your area. I also eat a lot of eggs - poached. tuna & chicken will give you a lot of protein too. Use unflavored protein & mix it in your foods for more protein. You have to make sure you don't put it in hot liquid over 140 degrees, or there about. Good luck with your new Sleeve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
