Surgery is tomorrow and I woke up super sick with a headache, swollen glands, sore throat... ugh! Did any of you have surgery while sick? I am not going to put this off!!!

I got really sick a few days before surgery. They take your temperature, so if you have a fever they may move the surgery. Generally as long as your airway isn't compromised, you should be fine. After surgery you need to be able to breathe clearly without being conscious enough to wake yourself up and cough if you have flem in your throat. I've been sick for two surgeries and I just didn't tell them about it. I figured as long as I can breathe while unconscious, I was good to go. If, however, I had goop in my throat, I would have mentioned it to the surgeon. No point making it through surgery and then dying because you choked on your own flem. :)

Hope you feel better!

@@AvaFern, that's exactly my thinking. I just have a headache and bad sore throat, and swollen glands. It's not like I'm coughing or anything, so I should be good to go.

I had cough and phlegm, but I had the surgery anyway. It was hell trying to cough after surgery. My abdomen hurt SOOO much everytime I coughed/sneezed. If I would have known it was going to be painful I would have put it off , but yet I'm real cry baby.

Your doctor will determine whether or not you will have the surgery when you get to the hospital. I have a friend who was scheduled for surgery, and during her assessment at the hospital just an hour before her scheduled time, the doctor postponed her surgery due to her being sick.

I'm not telling you this to scare you or be a negative Nelly, but you should prepare yourself just in case they do decide to postpone your surgery. Your doctor isn't going to do something that is going to potentially jeopardize your recovery in any way, and I would just hate to see you devastated because you weren't prepared for that possibility.

I wish you the very best!

i had a head cold the day of my surgery...really stuffed up. i had been treating with sinex nasal spray and i was breathing clearly. i did not have a fever or swollen glands.

also, after surgery i was on oxygen to start and that seemed to keep me clear until the day i was discharged

The anesthesiologist said if you have no temp and it's not in your lungs they'll do surgery.

@@yogachick - I actually thought this was a topic I started 2+ weeks ago. A couple of days before surgery I started getting sick; sore throat, headache, swollen glands, even fever! By surgery day, I was "sick as a dog"!!! I was so anxious about surgery that I decided to go & take my chances. In pre-op they took my vitals and no fever. I did tell the nurse that I was having sinus issues, probably from allergies, which I do have. She listened to my lungs, which were clear and she since I didn't have a fever & my lungs were clear, I should be fine but she would inform my doctor. Obviously, he didn't have a problem with it!!!

I did have some fever after surgery, but all-in-all, I did well. A lot of coughing, so make sure you use your incentive spirometer after surgery to get your lungs moving, and walk, walk, walk. Good luck to you!!!

I made it! I think the iv antibiotics wiped out whatever I had. I'm in a lot of pain and have a minor fever but from everything I've read this is normal. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
