Did Anyone Have?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone have pain in your left shoulder after surgery? I'm six days out and that's the one thing that's bugging me.

I didn't have it myself, but my surgeon's pre-surgery meeting told us that that is classic gas pains. They said people tend to worry over it since it seems like nothing should have happened up there and the tingly left arm is associated with heart attacks, but the gas after surgery just gets trapped up there and can hurt quite badly. Try walking around a bit more if you can and it should go away relatively soon.

Yes I did probably 4 days out. My surgeon explained the reason why it happens but I can't remember what it was. Anyway, I know this sounds nutty but it hurt so I punched my arm and it went away! I'm not telling you to hit yourself (I don't want to be responsible if you Knock yourself out but it worked for me:)

I had it mostly in my stomach and back and it was so awful. I had to walk a lot to take care of it.

Left shoulder pain is very common. It's from the gas they use to inflate your stomach. It goes away after a week or two. Try Gas-X and walk walk walk! ;)

I have not been sleeved yet. However I did have gallbladder remove and the gas they use to blow your stomach up will raise and settle in your shoulder. Trust me I learned the hard way. I swore they dropped me in my should felt like I broke it. Best thing to do is walk and walk! Also gas-x strips will work. Good luck!

It's called referred pain. What is really hurting is your diaphragm. However, the nerves carrying sensation for it and your shoulder enter the spine at about the same place, allowing a bit of cross talk and confusion to occur.

Same thing happens with the heart and the left arm.

I had left arm pain for two whole weeks. I don't think it was just gas pain. It felt like they must of had my arm turned a funny way during surgery or something for the 2 1/2 hours it really hurt.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to hear that it should go away within the next week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
