Got a little snacky. Need recipes1

Recommended Posts

The last few nights (at night after dinner) I am finding I am getting a little snacky. I have to really address this as it was a big reason I gained weight pre-surgery. Late last night I had a bite of my daughter's pizza, then asked my husband to get it away from me. I don't want to go down the rabbit hole. So I had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.

I did pretty good over Valentines, avoiding chocolate and wine. I've been checking out lots of recipes for cooking post surgery. Anyone got any great recipes to share?

I suggest you look at the blog, The World According to Eggface.

I keep some ready-to-go good but still good-for-ya Snacks around for a late night treat. Kozy Shack light puddings are very good, have some Protein and are very satisfying (rice pudding, tapioca and chocolate). They come in 4 ounce serving size so it is a no brainer. Another choice are Cocoa Almonds packets from Emerald Nature. They come in 100 calorie packets and are not sugar filled. They help with that chocolate craving while getting some Protein and Fiber. They also make a walnut and almond packet variety. These are crunchy and appetite satisfying as well. On low intake days, I might have both a nut packet and a pudding.

Bottom line suggestion: find Snacks that will work for you. Even if it means keeping some sugar free Jello ready for a quick go to -- even if you haven't waited 30 minutes since your last drink!

Good luck!

The other thing I believe is important is to find things that satisfy your actual craving. For example if you are wanting salty, find something salty that works, otherwise you may eat the "substitution" only to end up eating something else in addition just to satisfy that craving.

I wish that someone would come up with an approved salty snack, and a sweet one. This too is definitely my nemisis.

For those salty cravings, I'm finding the wasabi flavor of seaweed Snacks at Trader Joe to be fabulous. They also do a sesame one that's good - but the wasabi curbs the salt craving somehow. Love these!

For sweet I always crave chocolate, so half a chocolate chunk Quest bar is my go-to snack. I also allow myself one tiny square of dark chocolate each night if I've been staying on plan and have points left over -- okay sometimes even if I've been a bit lax.

I found these crunchy edamame in the back of TJ Maxx . They totally help when I'm craving salty/crunchy. For sweet, I like to eat 3 tbs of trail mix...the raisins and yogurt chips satisfy that craving. The only thing is, I limit myself to two snack portions a day. I don't like the feeling of grazing all day. I also make quite a few recipes from World According to Eggface and freeze them into small portions. Definitely makes packing my work lunch easy.

ETA: another idea for sweet, Lenny & Larrys Complete Protein cookie. But, only like 1/4 portion because while vegan, have a good amount of calories. My favorites are pumpkin spice and Peanut Butter and I gett them at Vitamin shoppe.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
