Curious... what is reason for supervised diet before banding?

Recommended Posts

Isn't it an insurance thing? They want you to prove that you can't lose weight with diet alone, so they order a Dr. supervised diet.

(I say this, going totally by what I have gathered here from you guys, cause I am Canadian, and there ain't no insurance companies covering the band, supervised diet or not*)

*excluding Quebec? hehe

It is not an insurance thing (unless it is a 6 or 12 month diet) it is a doctor thing. The 2 week diet before surgery is intended to shrink your liver and make it easier to move around inside there while banding. Some doctors do it, other don't, that is why the diets vary in length and type. It is just personal preference for your doctor.

uhh... she specified that she was not talking about the 'liquid pre-op diet' for 10 days that she did, which is obviously the liver shrinking thing.

She says "I didn't have to do it." (but did do a 10 day liquid diet pre-op), meaning, she's not talking about that. So yeah, you can't say "It's not an insurance thing." BAM! Thanks.

My bad, I read it wrong. And I did mention if it was 6 to 12 month thing it was insurance.

From what my dr's said that it is an insurance thing for the 6mths of showing exercise and diet. Lucky enough I went for my seminar one day and had surgery 3 weeks later. My insurance had a no wait policy, and covered surgery 100%. My doctor is the one that told me this directly.

That you truly can't lose the weight on your own, and DO need surgery?

I'm sure they also count on alot of people saying 'screw that, i'm not waiting that long' and giving up on going the insurance route.

I agree with both of these reasons. They probably also want some sort of documented "proof" that you have tried to lose the weight.

Thank you . Proving that you cannot lose weight that way is a waste of time. So it is for a stupid reasons. Insurance!!!

My insurance does "not pay for treatment of obesity".

I just went through the 6 month mandatory(Ins)diet coaching thing.

I was a waste of time for me because I was never going to say ..."oh forget it, I'm not waiting 6 months"...and the only two things that I learned was how good olive oil was for you instead of butter, and learning to drink more Water. I never lost weight in these past 6 months. I am just so glad that it is over now. It was a telephone coaching program and I never got to meet my coach face to face.
