Calcium vs Calcium Citrate

Recommended Posts

So I went to buy my calcium citrate with Vitamin D ....chewable as I am only 11 days post-op. I ended up getting Calcium wafers with Vitamin d from Bariatric Support. I didn't even realize that it wasn't citrate until after I opened the bottle.....I cannot find much online regarding the difference in calcium vs calcium citrate....or even there is a difference....has anyone run into this? post-246851-14240516667615_thumb.jpg post-246851-14240517215895_thumb.jpg post-246851-14240517605559_thumb.jpg

I bought those, too. I don't know the difference but I showed them to my NUT and he wasn't so much against them for my Calcium because of citrate or not. He did object to the price. I could never find calcium citrate chewables other than these. I assume someone else will pipe up with a good answer. I still prefer chewables but now buy Citracal from CVS which was recommended by my NUT. Unfortunately, I couldn't find chewables.

But I would also love to hear the difference as well.

I think those are what I took during the first month or so after surgery. I then switched to the soft chewables from Bariatric Advantage but only took those for a very short period of time. I now take a calcium citrate capsule that I get from Vitamin Shoppe and haven't had any problems. I've been taking them since October without any problems. They are only 250 mg so I take 2 capsules, 3 times a day. I also take Vitamin D in the morning as well. I hated the taste of the chewables!

I take these, recommended by my nurse and surgeon who also had the RNY....And they were easy to find at my local walgreens. On top of that they taste like toosie rolls..

Mrsgibson may i ask how may do you take a day ? Morning and afternoon im 3 days post op

I take 3 a day, 2 hours a part. My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow at 12 noon.. A typical day for me would be 1 Multivitamin when I wake, 1 Calcium chew for Breakfast, 1 calcium chew for lunch, 1 multivitamin for dinner and 1 calcium chew before bed. As long as they are 2 hours apart from each other you can take them at the times that works best for you.

It says right on the label you posted "calcium(as calcium citrate tetrahydrate)

It is citrate!

You can't get calcium that is not part of a combination such as calcium citrate or (more commonly calcium carbonate) - the mineral calcium doesn't exist on its own. Calcium carbonate is what is in tums, etc. and is not quite as well absorbed or used as calcium citrate, that's all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
