Starting this "journey"is a bit unreal.

Hi

I am Melissa 35 I weighed in this week at 330 which puts my bmi at 50 ..i tell you these things first because.. 1 i have been living a heathy and fit lifestyle ...if i were a 150lb person... and to no avail i have lost and kept off only 30lb in 5 years ive had all the blood work and scans and next saturday i goto my seminar to begin my said journey to a Rny gastric bypass..although i am excited about the added Help to my life ..i dance 3 days a week and i eat healthy.. does this surgery make me a failure ? Does this put me into the pain in the ass for my family category. .because ill be eating baby size portions and protien shakes while i am sure i will also then be as i am no looking at everyones portions even tho healthy a little closer.. i am not scared about the after effects in which i can prevent like dumping and the blocking but ...just dehydration and being tired...which i know will have to be worked through..anyways sorry this is so long ..i have done way to much research and reading and videos and browsing because i wasnt looking for surgery my dr said it was the only option left or wait for the health issues to start im 35 and i have zero health issues ..thus far *knock on wood* ..so here i go ready and willing.. but please can i have a shoulder or ear please!

Good luck skc72... have you started your preop diet ? What kind of research have you done? Waiting ?insurance etc... im very nervous on the wait and insurance fronts..

I'm 37 and have no health issues other than PCOS and aches and pains. My BMI was about 44 but I'm down to around 40 now. (It's a requirement to lose weight before my surgeon would schedule a date)

My RNY is tomorrow. (!!!)

I looked at it this way... So I do it now when I'm healthy and lower risk? Or so I wait until I'm sick and have more chance of complications. I choose now.

Additionally, when doing research I looked to see what people regretted about the surgery. I wanted to see if they could go back, would they do it again. By far, and I mean really--BY FAR, the only regret that people had was that they didn't do it sooner.

ty your right ..i dont want to wait i just want support my soon to be hubby and kuds are supportive but im sure you under when i say they dont get it..

I have done tons of research. I am done with all my tests. And I'm in a pilot program at work so I didn't have to do anything with insurance.

@@wowmelissa, at this point it'd be weird if your mind wasn't going a million miles an hour with a mixture of hopes and fears. I have a bunch of thoughts in response to your post. In no particular order...

First, you'll be surprised how easy it is, post-surgery, to look at the food other people are eating and not be at all tempted. Or to just dive in and eat a bite, then move on.

As for energy, you will definitely be low on energy for the first couple of weeks as your body is reeling from the shock of surgery. But you will be AMAZED at how much energy you have once the weight starts to come off and your Protein diet starts to work its wonders.

Dehyderation belongs firmly in the "preventable" category along with dumping and the others. I had surgery just 6 weeks ago, and was routinely hitting my Water and Protein targets - without shakes or powders - in less than a week. The only exception was when I had a headcold for two days and could not get the food in; then I used Protein drinks. Anyway, you have to train yourself to do it, and you'd better find a nice water bottle because that sucker will go with you *everywhere*, but it's achievable like everything else.

I was about your size / BMI at 35, pretty active with no health issues. Then it all caught up with me in short order and by the time I was 40 I had developed diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Those are what spurred me to do RNY, and in some ways I wish they'd come earlier so I would have done this surgery sooner.

Lol i have a fav Water bottle ...and i have a strick diet and water intake now due to a Migraine medication and i am good at following schedules and routines. ..i think i am a very huge mess in the mind department as u said a mile a minute man maybe if i had considered surgery before i had walked in that day..do you know how i might go about finding out more about my insurance qualifications. .i read everything i could find and called them they basically said i would find when my pcp applied ugh i dont want a huge let down but i did read that the higher bmi get easier results

I think most insurances will automatically approve BMI's above 40 even with no co-morbidities, but they vary in what their pre-op requirements are. mine requires 3 mos of supervised diet attempts, which just mean I have to weigh in at the weight loss clinic (vs. my regular doctor) monthly for 4 times, see their nutritionist once, and either lose a little or maintain. As long as I don't gain in that 3 mos I'm good.

When I first approached my PCP about bariatric surgery he was (and is) very against it. He said he only recommended it for people who were basically going to die soon without it. He then proceeded to give me the same tired advice of smaller portions, more exercise, etc that I've heard, and tried for 20 years. (he does approve of low carb at least)

I currently have hypertension, asthma, bad knees and feet, reflux and am pre-diabetic. Why should I wait until those are worse, until I'm a full-blown diabetic and face kidney failure, or loss of vision or a limb?

I'm 52 and already wish I'd looked into this 5-10 years ago before I had so many health problems. Hopefully in a few more months I'll be on the losers bench!

I wish i myself had thought of this i just was doing the regular appointment but now im glad because your right i dont ha e huge issues YET but my knees are going and my feet swell and im guessing i may have sleep apnea. ..i talked to my insurance today and the were just like submit the request ...thats it i asked d or more info the say request the procedure then we will see what needs to be done ...smh annoying i thought thats what had been done...ugh i guess we are back to the basics :)
