Shanna213 7 Posted February 15, 2015 How long before the pain subsides? I RNY on Fri 2/13. Been taking pain meds every 4-6 hrs but still can barely get around.
anaxila 501 Posted February 16, 2015 It should start to fade soon. The first 2-3 days can be really harsh but it will get better pretty quickly. I recall setting my phone's timer to chime after 5 minutes of walking up and down the hallway of my house. For the first couple of days, 5 minutes was pretty taxing. Getting in and out of bed was difficult, and I don't have a recliner or anything else to sleep in. I took pain meds pretty consistently around the clock for the first 4-5 days, and then 1-2 times a day for another week or two. I was even taking a dose here and there up to 4 weeks out. I know there are some folks here who never had much pain, never took anything harder than Tylenol through their recovery, but I was not one of them. I know that everyone says this, but walking baby steps around the house, drinking Water until you think you're going to grow gills and swim away, and getting your Protein through any means necessary, will all make your recovery that much smoother. Good luck, and welcome to your new world!

acbayliss 33 Posted February 16, 2015 Two weeks out and I was still on pain meds every 4-6 hours. I stopped taking pain meds about 2 1/2 weeks out because the doctor made me. I was still in a lot of pain. It took up to 4 weeks to subside. I hope you start feeling better soon.
HappyChic 32 Posted February 17, 2015 I'm one week post op and, as of yesterday, I only need pain meds right before bed. Feeling pretty good at this point but some positions bother me such as hunching over to do the dishes. I'm slow at walking and still have some swelling. Hoping to be 100% by next week. Now to get rid of this cold...
NewMary83 52 Posted February 22, 2015 I'm glad you posted this, I am having the same concerns! I am three days post op and still in a fair amount of pain! Also I can hear and feel things moving around in my bowels... Like the Water I'm drinking... I was so hoping I would be more like the other people who have had little pain but this pain sucks! Shanna213 7 Posted February 22, 2015 I'm now on day 9... the staples came out yesterday (at my insistence.. they wanted to wait another week) and it made a huge difference. Now only mild pain getting in out of bed or bending over. Dr said I'm dehydrated and if I can increase my fluids then I'll start to feel even better so that's my goal. Kalberto66 24 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) I haven't been on pain meds since the day after surgery. Surgery March 3, meds (morphine) March 4, nothing since...I think I am doing well...no pain, no nausea, hopefully it stays this way... I think each person reacts differently...or at least our bodies react differently to surgery.. Edited March 7, 2015 by Kalberto66
MsAlaineus 63 Posted March 10, 2015 I how many days did everyone miss from work? I am having my procedure sooner than I thought and need to know what kind of time off I should ask for.
LisaCO 169 Posted March 10, 2015 Depends what kind of work you do. I am a nurse. I took 6 weeks off. Took about 4 weeks for one incision to close.
MsAlaineus 63 Posted March 11, 2015 Wow! When were you able to stand for long periods of time?
LisaCO 169 Posted March 11, 2015 12 hour shifts were long at first I was exhausted at the end of my shifts. Took me probably another month to get my stamina built back up. I am 5 1/2-months post op down 107 pounds & I feel awesome.
