Winnax 10 Posted February 14, 2015 (edited) So my work has me traveling every month and I'm in the medically supervised diet portion of this to shrink my liver. I'm looking at eating out for the next four days and it's kind of scaring me. I like it at home, I have healthy food and I know what's in it. Does anybody have any suggestions as to eating out and staying true. Edited February 14, 2015 by Winnax
anaxila 501 Posted February 14, 2015 I travel a lot with work and have a two main survival tips: 1) Pack emergency foodstuffs. Since you're pre-op you could pack some nuts and single-serve Peanut Butter, sugar-free jell-o or pudding, in addition to staples like Protein bars. Since many hotels also have coffee / tea service, you could also pack oatmeal (e.g., Quaker Weight Control is full of protein!) and use the coffee service to heat Water. In a pinch, you can use a coffee cup to fix up the oatmeal, but a disposable bowl is good to have too. Don't forget to bring a spoon. 2) Visit restaurants with large menus. Diners are great for this. Explain that you are on an extremely restricted diet and you only want XYZ. If you can find something on the menu that's close, order that and modify it. Otherwise, pretty much anywhere can bring you 3 oz of plain grilled chicken and steamed vegetables if you ask for it. Most places are very very good for this. Don't forget to leave a big tip in gratitude. Hope this helps!
gwunderle 25 Posted February 15, 2015 You might ask your company if they could pay you per diem for travel. Then go to a whole foods or a good grocery store to buy the good stuff. Even if they won't pay for it, you will be better off. Also- pack Protein Drinks, oatmeal, Protein Bars etc in your travel bag. You can skip dinner with coworkers - if they insist, meet up with them for a drink afterward and get Water with lemon or a juice or something. Hard for even me to say it, but work needs to take second place for a while.
ready2B 263 Posted February 15, 2015 When I am going out for a meal, I always check the restaurant's nutritional info online before I go so I can make an informed choice of what my best options are. It's quite surprising sometimes - often I find that what I think would be low calorie and nutritious isn't at all and then other times something I think would be quite decadent is actually the best choice for me. Even if you can't find info about that specific restaurant, you can still do some research on things that most places will serve (such as typical Breakfast items, etc) so you have a least a general idea what to go with. Airplaneskinny 19 Posted February 16, 2015 Pho Soup from Vietnamese restaurants. I drink the broth only but I could eat the veggies if needed to maintain my doctor's recommended low carb diet. Good luck!
