8 wks post op still exhausted

Recommended Posts

I am almost 8 weeks post op and I still wake up utterly exhausted. On that note I'm still having constant gagging and "throwing up" at least once a day. When I say throwing up, it is mostly mucus. I've talked to my surgeon about it but he seems to brush it off like its nothing. I am getting my 60ounces in each day. Protein is still a struggle but I progress daily. I'm not sure how many calories I'm supposed to be taking in at this point but I am barely eating solids as I got dehydrated about a month ago and am scared it'll happen again. I just need some input. I've missed a lot of school because of the exhaustion and I have no desire to get up or do anything. This concerns me

Definitely sounds like you aren't getting enough food. Water is great for keeping you from getting dehydrated, but it won't stave off the exhaustion from starvation. It's rough if you are still experiencing vomiting 8 weeks out. Is it triggered by anything specific?

The mucus sounds like you aren't eating slow enough. It's suuupper slow. Try taking one tiny bite. (I fill no more than ¼ of a regular sized spoon or fork) chew until it dissolves then wait 2 full minutes before taking that second bite. After you finish eating make sure you are sitting up for at least 45 minutes. Even better take a short 15 minute walk. Don't forget to wait at least 30 minute before drinking after eating.

As for being tired, it's probably related to not getting enough Protein. Once you get your Protein levels up your energy level should return to normal.

I'm right about 8 weeks and only experienced tiredness after work a couple of times. Your exhaustion could be a number of things. Anemia being one of them. What and how many Multivitamins are you taking? My dr has me on 2 multivitamins w/iron per day. You could also be low on electrolytes. Try mixing G2 with Water and sipping it all day. Once you get low on these nutrients, it takes the body a few days to get your levels back up. Also, impress upon your dr the need for bloodwork. Find out where your nutrient levels are ...don't take no for an answer.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
