Gastric Bypass and Kidney Stones

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

After having my lapband taken out last October I am considering RNY. I met with my bariatric surgeon today who said she thinks I am a good candidate. When I told her that last year I had kidney stone surgery she seems a bit concerned. She told me to speak with my Kidney Stone doc and tell her I was considering RNY and see what she says.

I'm just wondering if you or anyone you know has had any issues with Kidney stones. Apparently once people have gastric bypass their chance for kidney stones doubles!

Hmmm. I have to admit I don't know about that. I DO know that the surgery can increase your chances of gall stones so they very often remove your gall bladder. Is it possible that you are confusing the two? Or does the surgery increase the chances of both? If they suggest talking to your kidney doctor, by all means, you should do that. It's always better to get more information.

Let us know the answer so we have that info also.

Thanks

I have no experience having kidney stones however it is definitely one of the concerns of my surgical team. You should talk to your nephrologist before proceeding, they will guide you through this.

My nephrologist is the person who actually asked me to consider RNY and helped me get the ball rolling. I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease and my function has definitely improved since surgery.

If you have a good one, they will help you through it.

Good luck!

Yep kidney stones are common after rny. I've had stones before and am 6 weeks out of band removal to rny. I'm sure this increases if you get less fluids which people often do. Chances increase for banded patients too. Your surgeon wants to cover his or her back and make sure you speak with nephrologist first. No harm in that.
