gal friday 176 Posted February 15, 2015 (edited) Breads are not complex carbs. Generally speaking they are simple carbs. Actuallly, whole grain breads are complex carbs. I meant to say starchy carbs though, that is more inclusive. I never ate rice or potatoes much, but I loved bread.< /p> Edited February 15, 2015 by gal friday
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted February 15, 2015 No worries. I get it. I don't think one needs to follow the rules 100% perfectly. 90% of the time makes more sense. I do however believe people should be aware of what they are putting in their bodies when they are making these choices. About once a year I go on a day trip where it is much more convenient to simply pack a sandwich. Just because I avoid breads and pastas most of the time doesn't mean I'm not going to do that. For me what it means is I will try to make a better choice and go for a whole grain bread of some sort whether that's a tortilla, a flat bread or just regular bread. livvsmum 2,369 Posted February 16, 2015 I have to say, once I hit my 1st goal weight I started to let myself slip in the "rules" area a little bit. I bounced back and forth between 140-145 for the longest time - like months and months. Well I revised my goal to 135 and I really want to get there. So I've started really tightening up on myself. Getting back to the basics, and I've lost 6.6 pounds in the past week and a half. So if you do what you know works, it will work. If you let yourself slip here and there you may not gain a ton, but you won't lose either. At least that was my experience. So the "rules" that I stick to now: no more than 40g of carbs at least 65 g of Protein at least 80 oz of Water planned Snacks (not grazing) cut out the sugar altogether...cold turkey (and after the first week or so, my cravings really lessened) Nothing after 8pm I also try to get in a Protein Drink every day, whether it be a shake or Protein hot chocolate because it gives me a lot of protein and few carbs. Elode 8,093 Posted February 17, 2015 I'm a rule follower...because not losing any weight at check-ins is frowned upon in my surgeons establishment! Ha! I'm sure I will loosen up as time goes by!

FairySleeve 297 Posted February 18, 2015 My doctors rules are simple: No carbonation No candies Drink Water 15-30 minutes before and after meals (1.5 liter/ day) Take 45 minutes to eat a meal Eat a bit of everything in a small portion 4 meals a day Eat at fixed hour for each meal So yes I follow them all and I added some more on my own like exercises, no carb at dinner (not always but I cannot eat too much carbs anymore my body doesn't react well with wheat) I'm just 7 months out but the rules became my habit already so I don't feel that I'm struggling to follow them. My restriction is still good so I cannot eat bigger portion even when I wish I could lol and if I don't chew well hmm I'll pay the price for that :-( it sure do happen from time to time. MisforMimi 760 Posted February 18, 2015 I'm so new, rules are easy to follow....and some were never gonna work. Stuff I do: + Eat Protein first, 82g is my goal + 30 minutes for liquids on either side of a meal + No grazing + Take 30 mins to eat + No carbonation + eat watching TV 2-3 x/week But I use a timer, it works great + Drink caffeine, I'm in Seattle and no doc was gonna try that! + I chew my food until it s a pulp. Had foamies twice, never again! + I'm not getting enough Water :-( + I drink with straws + I track my food everyday + I don't weigh my food except I do measure Condiments dressings, mayo, etc. it's actually a trigger. I weighed my food everyday for 3 years previously. I have a well trained eye for portions. But when I weigh and measure food I get a since of entitlement like I can eat it all, it's mine. And I'm likely to eat it all, rather than toss if full. I was in the denial that I could actually overeat weighed and measured food. It's weird.
skinnymom25 16 Posted February 20, 2015 I follow most of the rules Protein First & at every meal No drink before, during or immediately after eating No carbonation almost no caffiene very limited sugar & fat Only eat toasted bread I eat Pasta, but changed to whole wheat & eat only 1/2 a cup serving Usually (90%) stick to the 1200 per day calories - weekends are the hardest though I am more active so maybe it balances I have trouble with grazing - mostly at night Don't have a support group - none close enough to me (I do start counseling in March to work through my fat person brain) Haven't started exercise, but am almost on my last 10 pounds.... probably will require exercise for that last bit Not really any other "rules" just smart plating - eating like I should have to keep me from getting fat in the first place! rednecgirl 3 Posted July 27, 2015 I'm only 3 weeks out and there was one major rule I've broken since I got sleeved. I've always loved Peanut Butter but I didn't eat it daily. But like if we got froyo, I'd get peanut butter froyo, with peanut butter toppings, with peanut butter sauce. NOW... I think it was like 5 days post op I stuck my pinky into the peanut butter jar and had a tiny bit. Its become a daily regimen for me. My Dr. said it has to fit through a strainer but I can't resist. Its become something I do daily. Dip the pinky. And I'm struggling get some initiative to work out. However, I'm going to college in less than a month(yay!!!!!!!) And I calculated I'll be doing over a mile of walking a day just for classes. And I plan on not taking the buses ever day so that can be my workout. I think the reason I'm not working out is because I know I'll have a ton of working out to do when I go to college..

That mile to class will be a great start but trust me when I tell you that working out will be such a great stress reliever in college. You will already take care of yourself by eating right and you're going to start to feel better. Add exercise and increase gradually and the next thing you'll know it will be like breathing. You'll start to see a lot of results and that's even more motivation.Congrats on your new path to health and good luck at college!! Work hard but don't forget to have lots of fun too!!! Before you know it you'll marching up to get your degree. ????
VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted July 28, 2015 Young thing ... Do yourself a favor and measure out (with an actual tablespoon measuring tool) how much a tablespoon of Peanut Butter is. Don't guess at it -- actually measure it. That's 95 calories. You'll have to walk a mile to burn up the calories from that alone.
