Is a EGD a requirement before surgery? I see a lot of people posting about having one done. Or does it differ by surgeons? The reason why I ask is because it's not listed on my check list from my surgeon that I have to complete before surgery.

I've not heard of anyone who didn't have the EDG. But every surgeon is different. To be sure, I'd call his office. I wouldn't want my surgery delayed because of an oversight on his staff's part.

I believe this is a requirement for everyone. To look for hernias, and to check for H-pylori, and get you on antibiotics before the surgery. You want to rid your body of the h-pylori. Lots of people have it and don't even know it, and it is a real problem for the old tummy.

Thanks! I'll check at my next appointment. In my binder, under Preparation for surgery, preoperative testing - it says I'll have a breath test for H. pylori... No mention of a endoscopy...

After reading through my binder I received from the WLC last night, I don't think that it's a requirement. I've really never suffered much from acid reflux and I was told by my doctor to start taking OTC 20 mg of Omeprazole daily - which I am doing. H. Pylori test is done prior to my pre-op appt.

I believe it is required as they want to make sure you don't have ulcers, gastritis, h pylori, etc. also, if they find you have a hiatal hernia during the EGD is can be fixed during surgery.

No EGD for me - but it's really surgeon's discretion. Did have an H-Pylori test right before my surgery, and another CBC. If you have a history of hernia, ulcers, or severe reflux, they're going to pretty much require one. Just be glad it's not a colonoscopy.

My surgeon tests for H. pylori with a breath test. So my guess is I don't need to have one. It's not on my list of requirements.

They did my EGD day of surgery while I was under. It's just part of their routine here.

Its good to have evennif they dont require it, some places are different buy EVERYONE I know had one. H-Pylori can be serious and lead to cancer if untreated. I had a upper endoscopy done and tested positive for H Pylori. Thanks god I was tested because I would have not know until I caught stomach cancer. I am now 5 days post op bypass. Good luck

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
