Drinking during meals

Recommended Posts

I know we are not supposed to drink during meals (and so far I don't), but I don't know why. Does anyone know? Is there anyone who does drink during meals? I'm just curious because it doesn't give an explanation in the manual.

I was told the liquid can fill up your stomach and they want you to get your food/protein intake in

There are different reasons depending on each person and what they've "heard" or what their doctors told them. The main reasons are:

1) When it's time to eat, you want to have enough room in your stomach to get your Protein

2) You don't want to flush the Protein out of your stomach before it has time to digest

3) I've heard some claim it can stretch your stomach, but I personally doubt that.

I've heard other really weird ones but I'm not going to list those. I usually take a small sip right after eating just to kind of wash the food out of my mouth. It is recommended to stick with moist foods so your mouth doesn't get dry while eating.

When you drink with your meals it allows more food to flow through and you will be able to consume more. You won't always get that bowling ball feeling your supposed to get and you will eat more :D

The gist of it is that drinking while eating flushes the food out of your stomach faster. One thing that REALLY struck me post-op was that as soon as I started to feel full while eating, I reached for my Water. I realized that all my life I had been drinking while eating so that I could make room for more food. I had never thought about it before, but clearly on some subconscious level, my body had figured out that washing my food down with water allowed me to eat more food, so I was doing that without even thinking about it.

Not sure if you are being facetious ...but drinking to eat more has disaster written all over it. Personally I, like a lot of people, went to a lot of trouble to get surgery, I LIKE the restriction feeling and REFUSE to CHEAT the sleeve. #ChangedMindset

I don't think she was saying this is desired, simply saying this is what happens.

I was told a combination of the following:

1) When it's time to eat, you want to have enough room in your stomach to get your Protein

2) You don't want to flush the Protein out of your stomach before it has time to digest

I agree with @@ProjectMe I want this to work so I've been pretty compliant. What I have noticed now that I am 4mths out is that it's not uncomfortable to drunk following eating. I have caught myself doing so after eating. Now I just put the Water bottle away. If I have to get up and get the Water it reminds me to wait at least 30 minutes.

I have slipped up and sipped Water while eating, it didn't feel like it was pushing the food out, it felt like I was wasting space - adding Water to food to move it out backfired big time the few times I tried it! It's tricky for me because I have a renal disorder that causes me to need a higher Fluid intake (roughly 3 times what you guys drink, 4 on a really bad day), so I get horribly thirsty during meals, and I need a concrete reminder of why I shouldn't reach for that glass. When I have snack I drink with it, but not with meals. I already have to eat to slightly-less-than full, because my stomach moves food out slowly (45-60 minutes for a full stomach) and I simply can't wait that long to drink water, particularly in the evening before bed. Right now I am drinking most of my Protein overnight when I am sleeping, I'm drinking 20-40g in the form of an Isopure Protein water (waking up to drink is common for people with my condition, I just replaced plain water with protein water).

Balancing food intake with water intake is really hard, sometimes I simply have to choose one over the other. The Isopure is such a great compromise, but it's $$$!

Can our bodies break down and absorb protein in the intestines?

First of all, I have been a lot to get here too!!!!! I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, and asthma all due to my weight. If you read it correctly she asked if we knew why we shouldn't drink with our meals. That was my reason. I also like the restriction that is one of many reasons I chose this surgery. I have two baby daughters who are my best friends and have been so sick for a lot life. How dare you! I wouldn't cheat the sleeve. I thank GOD for ! So please keep your insulting hurtful accusations to yourself. Thank you! :(

Hurtful? It is very difficult to judge the tone of a board post. I have seen some crazy, irresponsible, "sharing" on boards. So I wasn't sure if you were just giving another example or giving a suggestion. I truly apologize for the confusion and appreciate you taking the time to clear it up. My comment was certainly not meant to be hurtful. Sorry you took it that way.

Thank you so much! It makes no sense why I would suggest to do this!!!!!!! Some people need to get a clue. I am trying to save my life! Why would I self through this if I didn't care! My mother died of cancer so did my brother my other brother was murdered. I did the gastric sleeve to live not die. There has been too much of that in my life!

I don't think she was saying this is desired, simply saying this is what happens.

Thank you for the apology and your right it is difficult, but I wish you could of asked me without implying the other hurtful comments. Not everyone is crazy and irresponsible. Try not to judge everyone the same. If it doesn't seem right, then ask but try not to offend. Sorry if I was rude. I took what you said hard because I too like all of you have been thru a lot to get here too and needed this to save my life. I thank the Lord and would never jeapordize all of this work or suggest to anyone else to. I pray everything is well for you and God Bless! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
