What was it like going from liquids to soft foods?

Recommended Posts

I would love to hear from the "revisions" what it was like when you went from the liquid phase to the soft foods like yogurt, pudding etc..

I had a band to sleeve conversion and a huge epigastric hernia all done at once. Going from broth to pudding was great. I was sleeved on 12/29. I've lost 18 pounds so far, however I started at 182 and gained 7 in the hospital from all the IV'S. Now I am on solids and doing well. It was tough in the beginning. I am better now and hope to get to 140 and maintain it.

No problems yet. I've eaten blended chili, Soups, tuna fish, scrambled egg, and yogurt. Thicker/more solid the food, the slower I definitely have to eat. Last night it took be about 25 minutes to eat just over 1/2 cup of tuna fish salad. Chew it up really well. The more solid foods definitely make you feel fuller and for longer than liquids.

I'm 4 weeks post-op and my transition from liquids to soft food was disastrous. I started vomiting most days and my stomach was very tender. Doc even thought I might have caused a leak with the vomiting and had a swallow test which was OK.

The nurse kept asking me if I was eating too fast or too much. I kept saying NO cuz I was eating like 2 tablespoons of really mushed food and chewing it like craze. Like I did with the band.

Well I went back on liquids for a few days and then started the soft food again. AND I ate less and slower.

MY LESSON--- the lap band gave me an immediate notice if I ate too fast, too much or didn't chew enough. My sleeve doesn't!!! It is much more subtle for me. When they say with the sleeve, stop eating as soon as you feel the 1st sign of being full is right on. I hate to admit it but I wasn't doing that and paid a price.

Since I started noticing the fullness at even 3 small bites and stopping, (sometimes waiting five minutes and eating another few bites) I have not vomited. It was the same with Protein drinks. I think, no I know, I am eating less than my cat! A lot less.

Today I noticed it getting easier to eat a bit more but I had a few bad weeks getting here.

I didn't have a pre-op diet and I was on full liquids from day 1. I was allowed yogurt. I was just happy to expand my diet and not rely on Protein Shakes as much. Thankfully I haven't experienced any trouble with re-introducing food.< /p>

I didn't really have a pre-op diet either. I'm supposed to move to soft foods tomorrow but was too hungry to wait so I started with a yogurt today. I just took a small lick and then stopped, wasn't sure if it was adjusting. I waited a couple of hours and then went back to it. I was able to eat the whole yogurt in about a 1/2 hour. Oh it was so good!

I didn't have any issues but do eat very slow and small bites. I am 6 weeks post op and can eat just about anything except carbs..I ate a bagel and threw it up. The only thing I miss is smoking! ☺

with the band - I would eat a bagel flat vs. a regular bagel. But I always made sure my bread was toasted. I don't plAn on touching be bread for awhile.

Hi. I started soft foods week 2. I can easily eat moist chicken or turkey and steamed green Beans. I also eat chili no problem. Revised on 9 Feb 15.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
