So upset- bad apt with surgeon

Recommended Posts

I went to see my surgeon about some gastritis and esophageal spasms I've had. He was NO help. He said he has no idea and I've already done what he would have asked me to do (egd, meds ultrasound) so for the next month just continue what my pcp prescribed me (double dose omeprezole, ranitidine for gastritis and nitro for spasms) and hope it goes away. He than said something that indicated he was disappointed in me for my amount of weight loss. So now I'm in pain, discouraged AND depressed.

Since your surgeon is a real piece of work, I suggest you find a specialist. If your primary doctor is just a regular physician, it would be a good idea to look into having an internal medicine specialist be your primary doctor. Regular phyiscians are just "bandaid" doctors, take vitals, give prescriptions and referrals. An internal medicine doctor education is more with the internal workings of the organs and they will be more of help.

I am sorry that your surgeon is not being helpful. If he feels that his work is "done" and is not being cooperative, this is a classic sign of a physician who may not have the best practices in mind. A good surgeon will listen to your complaints and if he/she feels that it is out of their scope, then they would at least suggest which specialty doctor you may want to look into. They are surgeons, so their studies are deep and know the internal workings of the body. So I think it is BS and just tossed you to the PCP. Classic.

Internal Medicine Specialty doctors are the best primary care physicians you can have. Like a one stop shop. Keep that in mind.

Thanks pac-woman. .. it's nice to know I'm not crazy thinking this was all so off.

Unfortunately, I already have an internist (I have an immune deficiency so I see an internist, immunologist, gastroenterologist, pulmonologist, and pcp) amazingly they aren't very good. With the exception of my pcp that is. She's really awesome but your right, there's only so much she can do.

I live in alaska and go to the Indian health care center. They don't have a variety of specialists, and they won't touch anything to do with the surgery.

I feel stuck, like I just have to deal with the burning of gastritis and spasms every time I eat. I want LESS meds, not more.

I think what upsets me most is he pretty much brushed me off and then made me feel like a failure.

Surgeons are resistant to do anything other than surgery. You should look for a gastroenterologist, they are the experts on this kind of problem.

Gal friday- I have one, you know what he said when I told him I'd been throwing up? "Yeah that's going around".... at the time I thought it was a bug too so I didn't persist. I'm gonna try to do this regimen but I'm not gonna wait 2 months, then I'll have my dr put in a referal with him about this.

Eclectick- Hmmm, I think my profile is defective... so my stats are as follow HW: 364 SW:347 CW:292

So I've lost 72 in 7 is months, 55 of that in the 5 months since surgery.

At my 3mo check up I had lost 40 lbs, so I think he was disappointed that I only lost an additional 15 in 2 months.

Logically i know 55 lbs in 5 mo tha is awesome, but I'm currently in a stall so I'm sensitive over not losing and him getting upset with me rubbed me the wrong way.

You know, my gastroenterologist is kind of an a$$ too. But if you try and don't succeed, try, try again. Maybe we should both try new GI doctors.

Haha, maybe its a gastroenterologist thing. Too much talk about s*** is rubbi g off on then :)

I could but then I'd risk paying $35 to someone new and they may turn out to be an a** as well. At least I don't have to pay copay for this guy.

Your right tho, I will keep at it till something is done.

$35 copay is nothing compared to what you will pay for a hospital admission if you let this problem sly.

Sorry, I view this from a health insurance standpoint.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
