Gaining weight pre op

Recommended Posts

I just went to my weigh in and have gained 4 pounds. I seriously don't know how it's happened bc I've been watching and exercising. My NUT was very mean about it. I showed her my food log and exercise log and I felt like she thought I just made it all up. I have hypothyroidism and wasn't on meds for awhile and have just recently gotten back on them. I'm hoping that it will be good soon and I can start loosing/maintaining my weight bc the NUT told me they won't approve me if I have gained even an ounce.

Thyroid meds can be tricky, especially when you don't take them consistently and properly. My thyroid was taken out due to having thyroid cancer. But I've always made sure to take my meds at the same time everyday, on an empty stomach, with nothing to eat for an hour afterwards. I lost 60 pounds prior to surgery following a less than 1200 calorie diet and exercising 4-5xs/week. So while being hypo is a challenge, losing weight is very much doable if you are disciplined and consistent.

I had problems loosing weight right up until the surgery (to shrink my liver). My dietitian put me on a 1000 calorie diet for 4 days. And then an all liquid diet for 2 weeks. Non fat milk and Protein Powder 3 times a day. In between only green tea, Water, Powerade ZERO and a little coffee if I had to have some sweetener only stevia blend. I lost 17 lbs. (Of course check with your Dr. If this is OK for you first.) Hope this helps.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I have no use for health care providers who are mean. I don't pay people to be mean to me. I pay them to do their jobs in an honest and professional way.

Did she at least evaluate the weight gain in light of your medical history or take time to really study your food diary and evaluate it seriously?

I'm with you too. Went to my 3rd nut appt and gained 7-8 lbs. I know why though. I went through the "I might as well eat it now because I won't be able to after" phase. I too have hypothyroidism. My nut also told me that I needed to lose the weight before my next appt or else the insurance may not approve me. I have been doing well the last week eating fish and veggies for dinner and having my shake for Breakfast and bringing lunch to work of tuna and a greek yogurt so I am increasing my Protein amount. I have also added exercise into my routine. I am going on vacation next week so will have to watch everything I eat but it will be worth it if I get approved for the surgery. I can't wait to start my new life.

Keep your chin up. I am in a similar boat. I have hypothyroidism also and have had a hard time with the pre-op diet. I have been following the diet to a T and I exercise 6 days a week. I was able to scheduele my surgery but my DR. said he needs me to lose 5 lbs before surgery (which is in 11 days). My NUT also seems like she doesn't believe my journal. I know and I am sure you know if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. It will happen! Good luck!

It's just so sad because I have really been watching everything that goes in my mouth and I am a total Dr Pepper addict and I haven't had any since my first appointment with the surgeon. Yesterday I had 900 calories and wasn't hungry at all today I've had 1,005 and I'm starving. I got rid of EVERYTHING junk/bad for me in my house (kids and hubby not thrilled) but I'm the one home and I normally turn to good with emotion so I don't want anything other then fruit or nuts to be there lol. I have until March 18th (my next appointment) to loose is what my NUT said or they won't approve my surgery. My 2 sons aren't school age yet so after we get my daughter off to school we come home and do Zumba, then after nap time I do yoga and belly dancing dvd. I'm hoping all this will help and I can loose the weight. My PCP doctor also said I need to get more sleep I'm only sleeping about 4 hours. Thanks everyone for ur support!!!

I have severe hypothyroidism as well. Every time I go on a diet it is like my body goes into to shock and won't lose anything for a couple of weeks-of course this why most have failed because I become unmotivated knowing I followed everything to a T! Fortunately, my pre-op is 2 days after I start my 2 week program and I don't have to see the nutritionist again. I don't have time for the negativity. I bet even though you haven't lost weight that your liver has shrunk because you have reduced your fat!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
