Day 4 post op ...still struggling

Recommended Posts

Hi

Me agin

So I had my surgery Monday morning and it's now Thursday

Although there has been some improvement I am still very miserable and sore

Water still hurtS to go down

I can't move very well and I'm pretty blue about the whole thing

I started the Protein Drinks this morning and it took 3 hours of sipping to finish a cup full

I assume this is all normal

Am just so exhausted

All completely normal. Hang in there. As the old saying goes, "Time heals all wounds". There's no doubt, the first month or so just plain SUCKS until you start to heal and find your new normal. I always say it's like going through labor. It sucks as you're going through it, but the end result is so worth it :)

Thanks Babbs

So are these 'gastric spasms' normal?

So many people seem to say they have no pain

I getting these sharp spasms if I drink even the smallest amount of Water and other times after nothing

They wake me up and pain relief dosent seem to help

My surgeon is not much help she just said 10-15% of people get this deep visceral pain

I just need to know it is normal and will go away

I am suppose to be back at work in 3 days! I can afford a complication

I had the exact same issues for the first few weeks post-op. Tight constriction in my esophagus after ever singly tiny sip, then came the gurgling and burping. It was pretty miserable. I found that marching in place while trying to drink helped a little. You just have to tough it out.

I personally didn't experience the spasms, but I have read about several people on these boards who have had them after surgery. I also understand that as you heal, it will diminish after a while. Good Luck!

Rosie,

I just had same procedure at same time as u. The doc prescribed medicine for this. Perhaps u can call and ask your doctor for a prescription if u haven't. Pray u feel better.

Hi! My surgery was also Monday am. I'm so miserable. I'm sore, everything hurts going down, and I'm also starting to second guess my decision. Why did I do this to myself????

Hi Lindsay!

I'm so sorry your having a rough time...although it is reassuring to know that it is probably normal!

I off to see my GP this morning to get some more pain meds. I am day 4 post surgery and am able to drink more now but still in a lot of pain

Plus I get exhausted with small boughts of activity

I feel awful as I can't look after my kids and my Mother in law is here everyday helping out

But I better than yesterday

And I managedy first Protein drink today

Trying to stay positive and get moving

Still having massive regret though...I homestly feel like I have mutilated myself

I also had surgery on Monday and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in my regret. I get so thirsty and envious of those around me who can just chug a glass of Water without issue. Why did I take that for granted when I was able to?? Everything I put into my mouth I taste on my tongue for hours, even after repeatedly brushing my teeth. My sense of taste and smell are just that sensitive. I've thrown out all the little room fresheners that I loved pre-op.

Finally though, the gas pains are at a dull roar. My surgeon has been calling me regularly and I am getting plenty of assurances from others who have had the procedure that this part sucks for everyone. I am planning to go back to school on Monday. I hope I can reestablish some form of normal by then.

Good luck to you all in your recoveries!!

I just had my sleeve on 2/9 and I'm at a point where I can't tell if I'm hungry or in pain. I'm afraid to eat to much, and afraid to eat to little. I haven't had a bowel movement since the day before my surg. I think I could, I'd feel a ton better! Anyone else having this issue??

I can't tell when I'm experiencing hunger either. I've been erring on the side of it being pain since I really cannot tolerate the flavors of anything at the moment.

Once you start getting the Protein drinks in your body will feel so much better. Just keep sipping. The nurse in the hospital told me that if I'm going to watch tv - use the commercial breaks to start sipping. I really felt my body healing the more I drank. Be careful of the pain meds- they will increase nausea which will make it tough. If you can, try Tylenol. Good luck

I know it's rough at first, but hang in there! I'm three months post op and I have no regrets. I didn't have the spasms that I have read other sleevers suffered through, but I did have some big issues with bowel movements. From my vantage point, I am so happy I did it and I wish you nothing but the best. Follow the dr's orders...water Water and more water. I'm at the point now where I have no hunger, and I make sure I eat enough every day. It gets better!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
