I am just about 7 months out from surgery! My Hair loss started about 4 months out and is just starting to slow down! Luckily I had really thick hair to start with but its definately scary when I could pull handfuls out with ever shower! I take Biotin and eat my Proteins but it still happened! Not sure if there is a magic solution! Good luck

Morning.......

I had my surgery back on 11/21/14. To date, I have lost very little hair. I am a blond, so I already have thin hair. I started taking Biotin 10,000mcg instantly because I was afraid I would loose my hair.

I am having no problem with the Hair loss, like I mentioned, maybe 1 hair a day if that. Most days I hve asolutely NO hair loss.

Don't worry, you should be fine

I started losing hair around month 3 and now that I'm just over 5 months out, it's already started coming back. The loss was never noticeable to others, maybe in part because I cut off all my hair at month 2, but I noticed a LOT of hair all over my bathroom floor, in the shower drain, and all over my hands when washing my hair or putting in hair gel. Now my little baby hairs that are coming in are about 3/4 of an inch long and look a little raggedy along my hair line and sticking up all over (like fly aways), but it really has not been all that bad. I plan to grow my hair long again and I doubt it will be an issue anymore a couple of months from now.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but you're just now getting to the window of time when you might start seeing some hair loss. It usually starts 3-5 months post op. It was pretty much right at the 3 month mark for me when it started, but some people don't see it start for a while longer.

I am one of the fortunate few who have not experienced hair loss. From the start (12/23/2013) I took 20,000 mg of Biotin daily. Walgreens has the 10,000 mg capsules and I still take two a day.

However, I did have a big problem with dry shredding fingernails, so the doctor recommended taking Gelatin every day. Once I started that, the nails returned to healthy in about two weeks.

Thanks to outstanding post-op nutrition, my hairdesser said that my hair is now the healthiest she has ever seen it.

My surgery was Sept 8, 2014. The shedding hit big time. I'm hoping it ends soon. However, I've had 2 surgeries relatively close together. About 3 months after each, I lose hair from the anesthesia and now from weight loss. So, with that said, I've lost A LOT of hair, but also have a lot of new growth coming in that is about an inch and a 1/2 long. It's had to be cut really short and is to the point that I can't even style it. Because of dramatic Hair loss, I wear a wig. Nobody even knows it's a wig at all. My hair was really fine to begin with. I've done all the "to do's" to help my hair, but it's going to react the way it is going to react. It's life.

Thanks everyone for your input! I already have fine thin hair so of course it's a concern... I started taking Biotin everyday since middle of December. I have yet to notice a change in my hair but definitely will continue taken. Scheduled March 5 for surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
