What to expect from gastro consult?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if anyone could share their experience with the required gastroenterologist consult pre-sleeve. At this point, I've already had the upper GI test and abdominal ultrasound, and have not been told to expect any additional testing, so I'm just curious about what today's appointment is meant to accomplish.

As far as I can tell, I only have this appointment, the psych consult, and a final nutritional counseling appointment before I can hopefully get insurance approval and schedule my surgery. It's been a long road so far and I'm incredibly anxious to get the show on the road!

I didn't have a gastro consult. I did have an upper GI and chest xray. Perhaps they are want to discuss the results of your Upper GI testing. Do you have a hernia they need to repair as well?

Not that we're aware of! The gastro consult was on my list before they even did the other tests, so maybe it's just part of the program's routine. Or I suppose it could be an insurance thing. I think they do the chest xray as part of the preadmission testing. Hmm.

Replying for the benefit of others who might search for this topic down the line.

Today's appointment was fairly quick and straightforward. The doctor took a medical history, paying special attention to history of GI issues and family history, felt my belly, listened to heart and lungs, and basically asked me about any concerns I might have. They scheduled an endoscopy for later this month. The test is meant to identify any abnormalities now, so that there are no surprises when the surgeon goes in to operate. My ethnic background (Italian) puts me at a higher than average risk of certain issues, so they'll be on the lookout for those as well.

One more appointment crossed off my list, and another one added. Anyone else feel like the preop process is one step forward, one step back?? I can't wait to finish jumping through all these hoops!

In the last six months, I have done, so far: 7 meetings with NUT, 4 meetings with surgeon, 5 Bariatric group meetings, physical, sleep test, full blood work-up, and an endoscopy this past Friday. Through going through all this, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, high fasting blood glucose, Vitamin D deficiency, and bacteria in my gut that would leave me prone to ulcers. Friday night that I was approved for VSG and my surgery date is February 26th, with pre-op on the 18th. I was annoyed with some aspects of process and felt that it was one step forward and two back at times. However, I am now even more confident that I made the right decision to go forth with this. I had considered myself fairly healthy, and found out-not so much. It is a blessing that I found out these things now, when I can reverse them, then to have waited longer.

I was not required to have a GI consult. I was required to have an upper endoscopy and a Pysch eval, along with meeting with a NUT. I started the process on Sept and I am

scheduled for surgery on March 9.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
