Why remove the band!

Recommended Posts

I met a woman about 6 months ago who had the band removed because of slippage problems. Eventually she developed an infection due to another gastrointestinal procedure, and she just never had it put back in.

Sometimes there are problems that can only be resolved by removing the band. That's what happened to me, but I'm very hopeful I can have a new one placed soon (waiting on insurance).

The removability of the band is the precise reason I chose it in the first place. Complications happen, we all take our chances, but I felt the potential complications posed by the band were so much less dire than those posed by RNY that it was the wiser choice. And when I get depressed about the removal, I remember that I have exactly the plumbing I had when I started, I'm 100% healthy, and if I wanted to walk away and never look back I could do so. RNY leaves one with permanent changes and malabsorption of nutrients, creating a situation that can be dangerous years later.

People get the Band removed usually for slippage or errosion. Some get it removed because they can't deal with the lifestyle changes (eating) or because they decide to revise to a different operation.

Has anyone ever heard of someone having their band removed due to hardware problems or the band breaking? I'm just wondering because I'm scheduled for band surgery on 6/19 yet I want to get back into martial arts after I lose some weight...i'm concerned the band port or tubing would become damaged. I checked with my doctor and said it won't...but i thought i'd check here.

Thanks,

George

I've never heard of that... in over six years of being Banded. If your Band had issues (like with the port)... it would be unrelated to your activity.

Hey George!

i had a leak in my band. In the band itself and my surgeon caught the leak and replaced the entire getup with one of the new AP bands. I asked the same questions, "what did i do to make this happen" and he assured me that leaks like this dont happen from any kind of thing the wearer can do, and that its VERY rare that mishaps like this happen at all. I was his first in over 4k surgeries. When it does happen its usually a result of a scrape or nick to the band during surgery.

There isnt anything you can do activity wise that will affect it.

Thanks for your replies! That does make me feel better. I guess i was thinking that I'm going to be apprehensive to have anything touch my stomach for a while. It's good to hear that the device itself is pretty tough.

I have this vision of 2000 years from now the future archeologists will be doing a dig and find a bunch of banded people. All that will be left is the band. We'll be dust by then, but the band will still be working. :)

If there is anything left of our physical bodies I figure they'll think the band was some really expensive stomach jewelry. :D

The band is tougher than we are by a long shot!

I am considering having my band removed; I'm suffering greatly from gastric reflux; had a fundal plication (stomach wrap around the esophagus) prior to the lap band because of severe reflux; I've had all the saline removed (supposedly) and still suffer; I take nexium twice daily, eat last at 4pm-not even Water, elevate my bed and still have constant reflux-so severe fluids come out my nose while sleeping; I have had band 2yrs and have lost 80lbs-about 20 from goal; any advice or encouragement? my doc says removing the band "might" help.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
