Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?

Recommended Posts

I've not lost much weight which is crazy since I'm barely getting in 300 calories a day probably. I know it's just how it goes though, it will catch up. I'm only down about 5 lbs since surgery. Yes the first few months are best for easy weight loss but recovery is important too. I'm just SOOO scared of dumping !! I swear they could have put me out, not done a thing, woke me up and told me I had the procedure and I would lose weight from pure fear of eating! lol

I haven't weighed myself since I've come home. I'm holding out for a bit to let some swelling go down. With my Protein shakes (~150 cal) and bits, I'm getting at least 500, one day was more than 700. Still, should be low enough to lose.

I'm really trying to get my Protein in to try and avoid the hairloss that I had with the sleeve. Truth is, I still don't know that I made the right decision in having the bypass. I wanted the sleeve to be enough. No dumping fears, no real restrictions in what I could eat, just how much. I love spicy foods and with the bypass I worry I'll not be able to have those.

Also, I know that losing now will be different. I can't expect a big rush of weightloss. I've had that already. It's my hope to lose 50 lbs by the end of the year. Even that may be too much to ask, but I'm hoping. I still have loads of excess weight, and though I don't expect to get to a tiny size, I'd love to be under 200 lbs someday.

How are you doing? I was just told today after my endoscopy that my sleeve that was done jan 9th is wayyyyy larger than it should be and that's why I'm not loosing (20 lbs in 4 mos)!! New doctor said he would have to do a bypass because my sleeve is so "hacked" that it would be too risky to do a "sleeve over sleeve" surgery. I'm just beginning to soak up this news so please any insight would be so helpful!! Hope the pain gets better soon

I had my sleeve revised to a mini bypass on Thursday. Physically I'm doing fine but it's been hard on me emotionally. Do a lot of research !! Think long and hard and decide what is best for you !

im really scared and have really been soaking it up over the last few days. I'm doing all the appointments I need to do but really, I have about 25 lbs to loose all together so do I do this with 25 to loose or do I do it myself?? But then again, if I could lose 25 lbs on my own I would never be looking into surgery...so confused

In my opinion, you try everything possible on your own first. You get brutally honest with yourself. Are you really trying ? Are there places in your diet you could cut back ? Are you eating all your Protein ? Drinking your Water ? Exercising at least some ? If the answer is yes 100% yes you are giving it your all and still can't lose or worse gain then and only then consider surgery.

The pain is much better, thank you.

Today's foods have been:

1 nectar Protein shake (w/200 ml 2%milk)

2 hb eggs w/mayo,

150 grams greek yogurt

150 ml chicken noodle Soup + 4 crackers,

~50 oz Water

...and it's nearly 7pm.

I don't feel any restriction, but I'm not pressing it to try and feel the restriction. I think I'm still too numb and don't want to chance it.

And you? How's it going for you?

I'm glad the pain is better ! How far out are you ? I'm still very very weak, I'm still trying to survive on liquids and yogurt. I think I'm dehydrated, I just don't even like the thought of having to try to consume anything right now :( I did mix a little bit of a baked potato in my food processor last night with a ton of chicken stalk to make it runny and then lots of salt. It was delicious and went down okay. I'm SO sick of sweet things right now :(

I know what you mean about feeling numb though ! I'm afraid of taking in too much because I can't feel anything yet either !

I was sleeved in Sept. 2012 and sleeve to bypass (plus some hernia repairs) on April 23, 2015.

I feel sleepy a lot, but figure that's the boredom and pain meds.

Another savory thing I've been eating is sundried Tomato hummus. O and Peanut Butter. Just doing a lollypop lick with those on a spoon (not together! ;) ) Erwtensoep (Dutch pea soup) is also a favorite. It's more of a thick stew instead of runny.

What about cream Soups? Cream of chicken, asparagus or mushroom. I'd be all over some cream of chicken Soup if they sold it here! If you feel it's still too thick, add some extra Water or some milk.

Okay same date as me then, except I was sleeved Sept 2013. I'm aloud cream Soups but I'm supposed to go easy on milk (can cause dumping) and high acid foods. I will try to blend some chicken noodle later. I have been wanting Peanut Butter and also cottage cheese but too afraid To try yet.

Hi Ladies:

I am a former bander (2005) to sleeve (2008) and now trying for the bypass. How much weight loss have you experienced since your conversion to bypass? Is it slower because you had sleeve initially or is the bypass giving you similar results to those who initially get the bypass?

Thank you for sharing.

Hi India928,

I had some regain before my conversion, but comparing the two--from day-of-surgery weights.....

at 4 weeks after the sleeve- | at 4 weeks after bypass conversion-

I was down 21 lbs/9.7 kgs, | I'm down 17.6 lbs/8 kgs

So I've lost my regained amount, but I expect it to go much slower than before. I stopped losing before the end of the first year with the sleeve. I'm hoping in the long run, this will be better overall.

Good luck!

I am 4 weeks out and Iv lost about 18 lbs, I pretty much did nothing but gain the last year with my sleeve so I'm happy with this so far. Also I'm only about 20/25 lbs from my goal so I know it will be slower coming off.

Watch those larger doses of omeprezole -- anything over 40mg/day. That can cause major bone loss!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
