Clear Liquids & Pre Op Dieting

Recommended Posts

Hello Gastric Bypassers:

I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow 2/10 and I'm beyond nervous!

I was wondering if any of you had to do Clear liquids the day prior to surgery! If so, what'd you eat?

What about a pre op diet? How long was yours? What'd you eat? And did you cheat?

Thanks so much!

I was too nervous too cheat. Definitely don't eat anything solild after 2pm or after bowel prep. They want the poop cleaned out as much as possible, not colonoscopy clean but fairly clean. Eating solids after midnight could cause asphyxiation and serious problems. If the surgical team finds out that you ate, you would be cancelled.

Clear liquid protocol:

Clear sugar free popsicles not pudding pops

coffee and tea with no cream or sugar

chicken or beef broth

Gatorade

Vitamin Water

Apple juice

Sprite, Seven up

I think that was all I was allowed

I had to drink cherry flavored magnesium citrate. Two week pre-op diet, 2 shakes a day with a sensible dinner, lean Protein, vegetables, salad, low-fat dressing etc etc. I could have sf Desserts, Jello, pudding, popsicles

My surgery is tomorrow as well! I was allowed all the things listed above. Started bowel prep at 9am. No solids since yesterday at dinner. Learned I hate sugar free Jello and Popsicles... Good luck tomorrow. Hoping for an uneventful surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
