Problem tolerating whey isolates?

Recommended Posts

I am pre-op, likely to be sleeved in mid March. I ordered a bunch of Protein shake samples, and I'm starting to get worried that I'm not going to be able to tolerate any of them. I am fine with the RTD shakes I've tried (Premier and GNC, which are both made from concentrates not isolates) but both powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and Syntrax (multiple flavors of each, mixed with water) have made me sick to my stomach within 15 minutes of starting to drink them. I start to feel really nauseous and shaky.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions or ideas? I am certain it's not a lactose issue. I am a few weeks away from my next visit with the nutritionist, so I'd appreciate hearing about anyone else's similar experiences and what, if anything, works to overcome them.

Alternatively, did anyone make it through pre and post op using a very small variety of shakes? At the moment, I'd rather pay more for the premier shakes than drink one more from Unjury, but I'm afraid of getting burned out and not having anything else lined up that I can tolerate.

. I keep hearing how frequent it is for ones taste preferences to change dramatically after surgery. Because if this I haven't bothered to even try any of the samples I have bought for my surgery in 18 days.

I have a huge problem tolerating whey isolates. I have only ever tried Isopure drinks (the ones that look like Gatorade), but they made me so sick I'm afraid to try others. My nutritionist gave me some Protein powders to try, but I don't want to feel sick like that again. My surgeon doesn't have his patients use Protein supplements at all, so the only reason I'd use one is in case of emergency that I can't get protein the usual way (i.e., food). I think I'd rather fall short on protein goals for a day than continue experimenting with the whey Proteins.

I'm doing the Vega One nutritional shakes. They are more expensive but the taste is great. I justify the expense because I am not spending money on food and this is only going to happen once in my lifetime. AND I deserve to have a shake I like.

@ I second Vega One -- I use their powder and mix with soy or almond milk or even Greek yogurt --- delish! And at Sprouts, you can buy 'sample packs' - maybe $3 or so - so you can try flavors - I've seen vanilla and chocolate, and haven't tried vanilla, but the choc is super-good. To buy the 'tub' is kinda pricey, but not really more so than any others - and lasts a very long time. It's def worth it to have Protein foods you truly look forward to --

Looking up Vega One right now. Thanks for the tip. Does it have that "protein-y" odor that the others do? I think the smell is half the issue for me... Eww.

@@gofigure I haven't noticed any weird odors from it, plus when it's mixed with milk/yogurt, whatever, I just get the chocolatey taste as prominent :o)

My fave Protein drink to do so far (I'm only 10 days post-op bypass) is this:

Soy or almond milk (soy has more protein)

Vega One choc powder

PB2 powder (Peanut Butter powder)

Splash of chia seeds for Fiber

Crushed ice

Whirrr it up in my Ninja - and voila - like a choc slush w/a hint of PB!

Use whatever proportions taste best to you (mine's heavy on the choc, lol) and fit what your doc/NUT says you need in terms of Protein, etc.

Oh, and adding some Vega One to Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt is really super-good too!

Oooooh. That sounds good. I do love PB2. Do you know if Vega recommends mixing with a nondairy liquid because its a vegan product, or for some other reason? I actually do well with regular milk. Picking up some Vega sample packs now. Thanks for the tip!

If you can't tolerate whey isolates, try soy isolates instead. Whole Foods has an entire selection of them. Vega uses soy isolates. Raw garden of Life is another alternative.

Blerd girl I'm trying to figure out if it's the whey isolate or if it's any one of many ingredients in the Premier Protein rtd's all I know is my intestines are killing me.

@@chubbsey1 - Buy a few sample packs of another brand. Try them for a week. If they don't bother you then you know it's the Premiere Protein. It's the same type of exlcusion test my allergist had me do for certain foods we thought were triggers but didn't show up on allergy testing.

@gofigure I don't think Vega cares if you add 'reg' milk to it -- I'm vegetarian, and can't tolerate most milk products (cottage chz, yogurt okay), so that works for me --

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
